platinum vs palladium (rings)?

Hi Crystal, I'm no expert, but we recently got enagaed and had my engagement ring specially designed for us by an extremely reputable jeweller.

Initially I was adamant that I wanted a platinum ring, purely becuase I beleived it to be a better metal and as my fiance had a large budget, wanted the best. However, our jeweller encourgaed us to buy a palladium ring instead and made good arguments in this regard.

Specifically, he recommended a white gold with palladium mix to be used for the band.

He basically told us that Platinum had a myth around it, mainly because it was a very expensive metal and because there is a lot of misinformation and understanding of it. He confirmed to us that palladium is actually the harder, therefore the most durable of the two metals. Metal hardness values are measured in the Vickers scale (HV)and the larger the number the harder it is. Platinum is 110 HV and 18k Palladium White gold is 216 HV. Also, platinum can scuff badly over time.

Our jeweller sent us photographs of the differences betwen the golds, platinums and palladiums. Also pictures of the markings of platinum over time. I'd be happy to email you the pictures if you'd like.

I have my palladium engagement ring nearly 2 months now and its fab. The colour sets off the diamonds fantastically. As to whether or not its a poor man's platinum, our jeweller said that, over time, it was far better value and mine cost a lot of money, so the answer would be no. Also, I suffer from exceama on my hands and the ring has definitely not caused any problems.

What is the real deal? I keep hearing conflicting information... some say palladium is softer than platinum, some say it is harder. I can't wear gold (yellow or white) due to allergies, so don't even bother suggesting i save my money and get gold.

Either one is fine. I've read that neither can be resized easily. I understand your issue. I have an allergy to yellow gold (and even surgical steel) because of the nickel. However, my white gold ring has palladium instead of nickel, so it's not a problem. If you like white gold, ask your jeweler if they can locate white gold that uses palladium as an alloy. I am told though that platinum is still the best choice if you have metal allergies as it has far less other alloys in it.

Finally, I need to add that I noticed a lot of comment on this board that platinum rings tend to scratch easily. Not sure why that is, but do check on that before you get it. Perhaps a coating can be applied to protect it (such as they do with white gold).

I will just say that i had serious problems with my platinum ring. It bent out of shape VERY easily and i actually lost a diamond out of my setting because of it. I eventually traded in my ring to get a white gold one because of all the problems i had. That being said i talked to a jeweler about all of this and this is what they told me. Gold is actually STRONGER than platinum. Platinum is very bendable so it can make the ring get out of shape easily. The advantage of platinum is that it wont wear thin...it keeps its weight in other words. White gold is really just yellow gold with a wash over it. Becauase of this the ring can yellow a bit over time, however if you have a good insurance plan with the place you got the ring they can re-wash it in the stuff that makes it white gold easily and it should not cost you any money. If you have a good ring you should only have to do this once every 1-2 years so it really isnt a big issue. Now white gold can wear thing quicker than platinum, (which means over time it loses weight basically) but i havent had a single problem with my white gold ring as far as bending out of shape/losing diamonds/ and other problems. The jeweler i talked to said she personally NEVER buys platinum as it generally has more problmes than gold. Platinum is more of status symbol because it is more expensive and it is in vogue right now. In short...get white gold and a bigger diamond, thats what i ended up doing after a year of problems with a platinum ring.

palladium is a relatively new metal that really hasn't been time tested, but from what i've heard from palladium owners, its much lighter (if thats important to you. for me the "heaviness" of the ring imparts a feeling of quality), and it scratches very easily.

on the other hand when platinum scratches, its very uniform, and it develops a satiny grey look.

if it was me and i was buying jewelry just for fun- i'd definitely go palladium. its beautiful and you can't beat the price!

but for my wedding jewelry... we weren't cutting corners. you'll own this for life! don't skimp on such a valuable symbol of love.

From what I've heard, they are very similar, but it's hard to find jewelers who deal in palladium or work with palladium (if you need to get it re-sized, etc.
