A lump on babies neck?
My 2 week old grandson just arrived for a visit with mom and dad. The parents just discovered a lump on the left side of his neck. It is hard to the touch and seems fairly fixed in position (not floating loosely) but he gives no indication of pain or discomfort when it is touched. Any ideas? We are concerned.
Edit: Thanks for all the advise. His parents are calling the doctor first thing tomorrow. This information may help...we have noticed the baby always seems to turn his head in one direction -- whether he is sitting in his car seat, being held or laying on his back. He is able to move his head in the other direction when something seems to catch his attention, but it always returns the other way.

There could be a lot of reasons, since it's fixed and hard I'd schedule an appointment on Monday to get it looked at. If it were loose and relatively soft I might have said it could be an enlarged lymph node, a hemangiomia, a benign fatty tumor... lots of things.

My guess would be a lymph node. This is generally not a huge cause for concern but given his young age, I recommend calling the doctor.
Good luck and congrats!!!

While this may not be an emergency room concern, the parents should definitely call the doctor as soon as possible!
