Sounds like OCD:::::http://psychcentral.com/ocdquiz.htm
My daughter has OCD, but everyone can have similarities but not all are the same. She is not a counter, but has to have things a certain way, she double checks, the thought life is hard too (although now she is in therapy and getting much better, she needed meds and they are working fine). It's not your fault you have OCD, it's a brain issue, it's misfiring, it's like your brain needs a reboot. Cognitive Behavioral therapy is good and meds if necessary will help as well. It seems OCD can go into a form of remission, with minor issues that may come up from time to time, but when you use the tools that you learn in CBT, you will be just fine.

I've been counting for years. I'm now 59. I can only do things around the house in 10's. Don't know why. I wash 10 dishes then do something else. I fold 10 clothes and then do something else. When were on the road I count semi's. I was told if it didn't interfere with my day to day life not to worry. It really hasn't and sometimes the family will make a big joke out of it. I laugh too.

I went through a phase once where I was constantly counting everything....tiles on the ceiling, rocks on the ground, etc. What is most important to consider is whether it is affecting your quality of life. Are you having trouble with daily functioning due to the counting? If so, you should consult your doctor. If not, see if it gets any worse. In any case, if you are ever concerned you should visit your doctor. Best of luck :)

Sounds like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It can affect people in different ways, but some people count. Google it and see if that sounds like what you have. I think they make medicine you can take to lessen the symptoms.
