I suspicion that you want to cut hair not just own a salon, and if you want to do that, of course you have to go to beauty school. And believe it or not I believe that is what it is generally called. Ultimately, you will want to get information from your state and county about the operation of a salon because generally they are highly regulated. You can get trained at any of the national chains to cut hair and they have their own schools of training. You can also keep up and learn more by going to seminars and learning the latest techniques. And when you travel that is a tax write off.

Keep in mind that this is a people business and you have to be very good with people. And if you or one of your stylists messes up a cut, and you do not know how to handle that situation, that person can ruin your business. And you have to know how to handle fickle people who work for you, and believe me you will have them.

Like others have mentioned before, there will be a mountain of paper work, but if you want it bad enough, it can be rewarding if you are prepared. Good luck to you!

It would help if you had gone to Beauty School to learn about makeup and hairstyling. Most people start out by being an operator working for someone else first. You pay a percentage to the owner of all your customers and any beauty products the shop sells.

In time, you may save enough money to buy your own shop and have your employees pay you a percentage of what they sell too.

The Small Business Administration is always offering free seminars to minorities ans especially women who want to start their own business and where to find funding for that business.

But be prepared to fill out a mountain of paperwork. Uncle Sam wants to know EVERYTHING about you.

Go here to register your business name, and make out a will so if anything happens to you,YOU will decide who gets the business and the state won't confiscate it because you didn't leave an heir.

Go here to register your shop with Uncle Sam and apply for a free federal employer ID tax number.

And if you need a wholesale supplier of beauty products to sell in your shop, email me.

You need money. You don't have to be a licensed stylist to own a salon, only to work on clients in a salon.
