Who agrees that the wealthy should pay higher taxes?

That’s the way it was when the country was founded. Poor people weren’t expected to pay taxes at all.

How did it even change?

Biden: Paying Higher Taxes Patriotic For Wealthy

WASHINGTON - Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans. In a new TV ad that repeats widely debunked claims about the Democratic tax plan, the Republican campaign calls Obama's tax increases "painful."

Under the economic plan proposed by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of American taxpayers — would receive a tax cut.

Although Republican John McCain claims that Obama would raise taxes, the independent Tax Policy Center and other groups conclude that four out of five U.S. households would receive tax cuts under Obama's proposals.

"We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people," Biden said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."

McCain released a television ad Thursday charging that Obama would increase the size of the federal government amid an economic crisis. Contending that "a big government casts a big shadow on us all," the ad features the image of a shadow slowly covering a sleeping baby as a narrator misstates the reach of the Obama tax proposal.

"Obama and his liberal congressional allies want a massive government, billions in spending increases, wasteful pork," the ad says. "And we would pay — painful income taxes, skyrocketing taxes on life savings, electricity and home heating oil. Can your family afford that?"

The McCain campaign said the ad is set to run nationally.

It should be a flat tax percentage.

And when the country was founded, there was no income tax for anyone: even the wealthy.

Considering that the Democrats want to let Bush's tax cuts expire in 2010 that right there is an automatic tax increase for 60% of Americans that pay taxes. The other 40% don't pay any taxes. Where else in the World can the top 60% support not only the federal government but also the lowest 40%?

Also, since when did the poor ever create jobs?

The wealthy already pay a higher percent of tex revenue. why is it wrong, when Bush cut taxes for all Americans, to also cut those of the rich? Are they not Americans? This concept that all the rich are evil, and only want to keep down the poor is just ignorant and stupid. A policy for all Americans should be for all Americans and should not segregate a person because of their social status. Creating class stigmas and evils is a wrong thing to do,its brings on socialism. Look at Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, and other leaders of socialist states, they used the back of the poor to break those in power, then they returned the favor by breaking the back of the poor. Capitalism, with all it's faults is the only system where average people can upgrade their own social status on their merits (not a caste society). Blaming all the problems on the rich is only going to create more problems for the poor, and may even put a socialist leader in government. A leader who really has lust of power and wants "to get back at" the greedy rich. Democrats are the socialist of American democracy and in the past decade they have faded farther and farther to the right.. and gave us Obama (socialist in dem's clothing) as presidential nominee!

Here is a short list of some thing I think the U.S. ought to do!

    1. There should be a flat tax, that everybody pays, rich or poor!

    2. Companies who move jobs over seas should be fined or made to pay a higher tax to do Business in the USA. Thus giving them incentive to STAY.

    3. We (the U.S.) need to get rid of the "favored nation" status awarded to some countries, such as China, and tax their imports at least as much as they tax ours!

    4. We need to get our fingers out of other countries "pie"! It is not our right, job or responsibility to tell or other countries what they can or can't do inside of their own borders! Unless there is a blatant threat to our peace. And the KEY word here is BLATANT.

    5. We need to aggressively search for and develop new energy resources! Buying oil from foreign counties, especially those who do not buy our goods only serves to transfer OUR wealth to them!

I could go on, but as I said this is just a short list.

The wealthy already pay higher taxes. It's based on income percentage, right? Who pays the government more money, the guy who makes $6/hour or the guy who makes $6 million a year? However, the wealthy who are philanthropic (give to charities, churches, etc.) have more tax breaks than the $6/hour guy.

Warren Buffett, who is the 2nd or 3rd richest man in America stated the wealthy should pay more in taxes. He stated that his receptionist pays a higher percentage of taxes on her income than he does. Something is seriously wrong with that. McCain is way out of touch with what is going on this country. That is why Obama will get my vote on election day.

Our current tax system is broken. I feel that we should all pay a equal share regardless of how much we pay. The fee should be a flat rate of about 17 to 20%. If you live in poverty, then your tax level should be $0.

If you make $20K, you pay $4,000

If you make $100K, you pay $20,000

If you make $1,000,000, you pay $200,000

No exemptions for mortgages, etc. This is fair. Our current system raises rates from 28% to 34% and you have all these deductions, etc. By doing away with the deductions, the process is clean and simple. Even a mental migit like Charlie Rangle D-NY, chairman of the tax committee could even figure it out.

As a working Joe all my life I have paid unavoidable taxes......Even with a family the specter of Alternative Minimum Tax stares at us to take away some more.

So I would expect that if I was rich I would pay my share of Taxes.

I believe everybody should have the same tax RATE. If you make 10x as much money as I do, you should pay 10x more in tax.. not 500x more.

The 70% tax rate Obama wants to punish successful people with is idiotic. What can we accomplish by punishing those who succeed?

we did NOT have an income tax when the country was founded.

Do you even know what the tax rates are? Don't the wealthy already pay a higher perecentage of their income in taxes?

We need a flat tax with deductions only for charitable giving!

Sure the question is how much more. BTW not only do the poor not pay taxes today but many of them, due to tax credits, actually get money from the government..
