Where to tee up the ball?
I hit from the forward tees. Today, the course had the middle tees about 3' behind the forward ones on par 3s. The hole is too close to use my 3 wood and too far to use my 5. So, I back up behind the middle tee and use the 3 wood. This way I am adding additional yardage so I don't over hit the shot. Is this legal?

The Definitions of Golf state " The teeing ground is the starting place for the hole to be played. It is a rectangular area two club lengths in depth the front and the sides of which are defined by the outside limits of two tee markers. So if you are within the two club lengths of the forward markers the shot is legal. If you are beyond the two club length rectangle, your shot is illegal. By your explanation you were within the limit allowed.

The teeing ground is defined by the tee markers which are the front corners of the teeing ground. From them it extends two club lengths back to form a rectangle. As long as you didn't go more than two club lengths back, and stayed withing them laterally you were legal.

Yes, you can hit the ball from anywhere behind and between the tee markers. The ball must be inside and behind the markers, but your feet can be outside.
It does not state anything in Rule11 of USGA rules about two club lengths.

2 Club lengths is the rule. See rule 11, definition of teeing ground.

I'm pretty sure you can go back two club lengths from the actual tees -measured with tthe club you will use. So you are legal.

...and the 2 club lengths can be measured with the longest club in your bag. It does not have to be the club that you will play your shot with. That is the same whenever you are measuring club lengths anywhere on the course.

U were ok..they were probably letting the forward tee area grow in or reparing it
