Will landlord have a problem with this?

I have been living in my current apartment for 2 years. I'm pretty much a dream tenant as I come and go and am extremely quiet, pay everything on time, etc. My boyfriend stays over a lot, a couple of times a week, and we are always at my place. He says hello and talks to my landlords so they know he's there a lot. They recently raised my rent $100 stating it was due to the increase in utilities. They also let me have a puppy which I recently got. I am considering letting my boyfriend move in with me as he is there so much to begin with. Of course, he will be splitting the rent with me. Do I have to ask my landlords before he moves in? They might even think he lives here already since he is there so much. Do you think my landlords would have a problem?

Update:

I do not have a lease.

yes, you do need to tell your landlord. if you do not, and your lease has a "no nonapproved subletters" clause, than he could evict you for this. talk to the landlord and find out your options. he will probably insist that your boyfriend be on the lease. if your lease is up soon anyways, they might be willing to wait until you reup another lease. however, the 100 dollar raise in rent would have had to have been when your lease got renewed, not in the middle of it (unless of course there was a specific clause in the lease stating that this could happen).

Your $100 increase was probably because they knew your boyfriend was there a lot. If he moves in you can expect another increase. If you talk to the landlord before he moves in I don't see a problem as long as they've already been in contact with each other. Just don't move him in without first talking to the landlord.

You do need to ask your landlord if you can take on a sub-tenant - and that's what your boyfriend would be. Likely they won't have a problem with it, just ask you to sign a new lease which includes him and will go one year from the date signed. That's what we'd do anyway - he's there all the time anyway and what do we care how many people are there as long as you pay the rent you owe?

You would need to ask your landlord if he would require a lease to move in with you.

What if you landlord tells you it is okay for now, but then down the road they change the rules on you? Since there is no contract, they can evict you for trespassing.

In any type of arrangement, it's always best to have a written contract because it's their word against yours. It would be much easier to resolve issues if you had a written agreement stating all the facts.

You do not have a lease, but should ask the landlord out of common courtesy.

As a landlord, I would not have a problem with allowing a tenant's boyfriend to move in, but I would want to run the application process to ensure that his credit is decent and there are no past criminal charges, evictions or court cases.

YES- You MUST check with your landlord before having him move in. If you do not, he will be an unauthorized tenant and they can evict both of you.

All people living in a unit MUST be cleared by the landlord first!

They should not have a problem with it as long as he meets their general screening criteria. It will only be a problem if he has bad credit or criminal history.

I wouldn't ask' but if you want your landlord to know just tell that your boyfriend is moving in. Your landlord won't have a problem with it. All he cares about is getting the rent on time, and that you don't destroy the place.

No one here can answer that question for you.

You need to ask your landlord.

If you are the model tenant you claim to be I don't see what the problem would be.
