How do you sell a leased car on craigslist safely? What are the order of operations?
My grandfather has a Buick he brought brand new and he realizes he made a mistake. (He's 92) How do I sell this car safely. Low mileage, Buick Lucerne. Probably $18,000 left for buy out. Are there better websites for this type of sale?

Hi Julius,
Here is your answer.
Post it on Craigslist if you want to but alone it will simply not bring the amount of visibility your grandfather needs. About a week ago I was referred to CarLeaseDepot.com (Lease Assumption Search Engine) from another yahoo'er and it is a great experience(so far..lol). They actually have people who posted it every day on craigslist and other sites to get my car seen by possible lease buyers. I now have 2 people doing a credit check with my leasing company. You will need to call your leasing company for example GMAC (it is on your lease agreement). First Julius, make sure that your grandfathers lease can 100% be transferred to another person. If they tell you yes then that is great because it means that if the person you and your grandpa transfer the lease to fails to make payments, your grandpa will not be responsible. Next get the credit application from your leasing company and have the person who you find off craigslist or Carleasedepot.com fill out all the required info and send to the leasing company. If they are approved then the lease buyer will have to do a full application and once approved by the leasing company you will be fully protected so you can hand the keys over! :)
I think this serves you best as an answer.

You cannot sell a leased car privately. You will have to buyout the car first then sell it if you want to do so privately. You can, however, trade it in or sell it to a dealer. They can process the title transfer and pay off your grandfather's leasing back.
A car with low-mileage can sometimes break even or get some money back, even as a lease. I recommend take it to a few dealer for appraisal, if you have a Carmax nearby, you can take it to them. They will buy your car even if you don't buy theirs.

You should look into transferring the lease to someone who is interested in taking over the car and lease payments. It's a lot cheaper and easier than other methods. Here is an article that has more details:

You can't sell a leased car, it isn't yours to sell.

If it's leased you can't sell it,, you don't own it...
You can pay off your end, and buy it from the dealer, and then resell it...
lease and rent are interchangeable here....
