Name Change, looking for how to contact the IRS (state and federal taxes)?
I just got my name legally changed earlier this week (not by marriage or divorce, but an actual court order).
I'm looking for forms or mailing addresses to send my certifified copies of the name change to both the federal tax authorities and the state of Minnesota tax authorities.
If anyone can provide me with the mailing address, and/or a link to the forms I need to fill out- it'd be greatly appreciated!

All you need to do is change your name on your social security card and with your employer. Of course, you'll want to change it on any bank accounts and other property you own.
Here's the link for the social security card: http://www.ssa.gov/gethelp1.htm
As for taxes, you just file them with your new name, which will show on your W-2 from your employer.

I gotta say that understand completely. I've got a friend who was entering a convenience store minding his own business when an uninsured, unlicensed illegal motorist drove into him and the store he was entering. Now he must to go to the Dr. once a month to have fluid drained from his spinal cord. No one will hire him even though he's willing to sign a workman's comp waiver in order to work. Insurance companies won't insure him. He's forced to be on social security and not even getting enough to support his family much less pay his mortgage. He would much rather be working. This state is a 'no fault' state and the person who hit him and the store got a $45 fine from a judge who said there was nothing else he could do.

Just send a letter and include copies of all your documentation. Make sure to include your social security number. Send to the appropriate address where you would mail your tax returns to.
For IRS visit IRS website www.irs.gov keyword: where to mail my return.
for State visit the site for the State you live at and they will have the address where to mail the info to.
It is good that you are thinking ahead of getting your name change with both before filing season comes around. Kudos to you.

When I got married and changed my name years ago...I believe all I did was take my marriage license to the local social security office and that was it as far as the government stuff.

All you do is file your taxes with whatever name is on your social security card.
