What are your top 10ish "must ask" questions for breeders?
I already have a pretty good list compiled, but will be meeting breeder in person for first time to see her, her dogs, and to make sure that everything is hunky-dory. Just thought I'd get some additional feedback. I won't list the questions I already have written down, but be assured I'm going to be checking to make sure the dogs of are good health, temperament, and well taken care of before deciding anything!
What questions do you consider "must know before purchasing" when meeting a dog breeder?
3 AnswersOther - Pets1 decade agoCharacter limit on AKC names, will these fit?
I am looking to get a puppy from a breeder of the Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael) later this year. I've been mulling over registered names for a while, but I can't seem to figure out a few things about character limits. I know the limit includes any spaces, punctuation, and the like...
I also know I need to have the kennel name, Phoenix, in it. But does the prefix of Ch. count in the character limit?
Right now I really like:
Ch. Phoenix Wings of Dark Flame
Ch. Phoenix on Ebon Wings
Ch. Phoenix War on Wings
Ch. Phoenix Nights are Never Forever
Ch. Phoenix Kisses of Fire
Ch. Phoenix Moonfire Melody
So if you guys could tell me first off, the character limit total. Secondly, if the Ch. counts in that total. And lastly, which names you like for these sleek, intelligent ebon shepherds. Names mentioned are keeping in line with the kennel traditions and sire and dam names.
Puppy is Male.
3 AnswersDogs1 decade agoUnique Renaissance Favors for Wedding?
I am planning on having my wedding at the Renaissance Festival and am trying to come up with good ideas for wedding favors that a mix of people from young and old and all across the spectrum might enjoy.
The major problem is that we aren't allowed to bring in outside food, so my ideas for chocolates shaped like dragons/fairies/etc would be out the window and I am left to non-edible favors only!
The wedding would be on the weekend of 1001 Dreams which is all about fairies, fantasies, and amazing things that one might not have believed in (until now!).
I am Irish, and that's helped me narrow down a few things.
I know for certain I do NOT want to pass out candles or picture frames.
Here's some ideas I had so far:
Small wooden mugs (if not too expensive, depends on guest count).
Suede leather pouches.
4 Leaf Clovers (thought it would be a neat gift and unique!).
Shamrock Bracelets (they're green with little clovers cut out of them, the rubber bands).
Plantable Flowers.
Fake gold coins.
Fairy dust.
Right now I'm just brainstorming so anything and everything you guys can come up with helps me decide what I do, or don't, want! Thanks!
6 AnswersWeddings1 decade agoWhat makes a cake topper just that, can something else be used?
I'm getting married in the next few years and have my heart set on a dragon cake topper, but have only really been able to find a few and none of which I like. There was one I saw a while back from a specialty online store with two dragons nuzzling on top of a grassy hill that could be painted any colors you'd like but I since lost the website and have no luck in finding it again.
But it got me thinking, what makes a cake topper....a cake topper? If I got some figurines I liked, would I be able to use those? Does it need to be a certain way to be put atop a cake? Or will anything flat bottomed/can be sunk in slightly work?
6 AnswersWeddings1 decade agoJust got new license plates with different numbers (MN) is this correct?
I'm in Minnesota and I ordered new tabs for my license plates. I bought the car about 3-4 years ago and so don't know if the license plates had been renewed a few years before (since they're changed every 7 years).
I had the license plate number from the car dealership that was on it and for the last few years simply got new stickers. But these year I got a completely new license plate pair in the mail. The letter mentions the new plate number and my new registration card, but then lists the previous plate number, too.
I suppose I've just never gotten plates with a completely different number and I just kind of want to double check that this is normal or not. If they sent me the registration card showing the change of plate numbers I should be ok, right?
And what do I do with the old plates? ..I don't even know how to change them, lmao...
2 AnswersInsurance & Registration1 decade agoA book about fairy kingdoms, a polar bear, a girl who marries him...by a popular SciFi/Fantasy writer, name?
I read this book about 4-5 years ago, and I remember it was supposedly based off a folklore (Russian I think?) tale? Where a girl was carried off by a cursed polar bear king (kind of like the movie "The Polar Bear King") and lives in his kingdom of eternal summer. Sadly about the only detail I can remember is she has a little bird named "Scruffy".
I really wanted to reread and buy this book but the name completely escapes me and I'm having no luck researching it online. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
5 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoFirefox keeps trying to restore my tabs when I reboot my computer, don't -want- it to. Any help?
I close out of Firefox completely and in the morning when I restart my computer, Firefox's homepage shows "would you like to restore these tabs?" and shows me the last page or few pages I had open before I closed the browser the night before.
In my Internet -> Options I have it set so that it should show my HOMEPAGE not try to restore my tabs. I'm not quite sure how to get it to stop doing this, and it gets a little aggravating because I close out of my browser and shut down my computer and it acts like it was accidental when it wasn't.
Any way I can get it to do what I have it set to do? Any help would be great, thanks!
5 AnswersOther - Internet1 decade agoDo you think opposing gay marriage is what God wants?
A lot of Christians who are against gay marriage and are protesting allowing it in the US say that it's because it's NOT WHAT GOD WANTS.
But technically, he supposedly gave us all free will to choose, didn't he? If he says you can sin at your leisure but you won't get into heaven, and I'm not going to stop you....then why should Christians act on his behalf in this manner in this regard? :P
You don't have to have sex with another of the same sex, but it's not just about sex. It's about self-identity and love. Who are we to deny true love? Separation of church and state. Your religion has no place in deciding if two consenting adult citizens should be granted rights given to other consenting adult citizens.
19 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoLooking to buy first home, need tips/pointers, please?
I'm looking to purchase my first home. Rented in the past, and think I'm ready to start finding my own place. However, I am only 23 and this would be my first time doing such a thing. No family I can rely on for help, so am asking the general public here.
I know, for starters, that I don't want too much of a fixer-upper. I know I should start looking at real estate listings, and should probably check my credit score. I also know that I should probably hire an inspector to check out the place before buying and get an estimate...and I also know a little bit about getting a deposit to lower my mortgage, and getting my mortgage loan approved before deciding to buy for sure.
But...I don't really know much beyond that, or in detail. The "summing up" equals the "what I know".
If someone could tell me a short "how-to-get-started" and the process it takes...or tips, or things "I wish I'd known when..."...I would greatly appreciate it, thanks!
2 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoLooking for breeders in MN for Belgian Shepherd, help please?
I have fallen in love with the Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael variety), and am having issues locating a breeder nearby! Half of the webpages I look at are outdated, don't list enough information about the breeder/their conditions for adoption/cost of pups etc.
Preferably, we are looking for a companion pet that is up to or less than 800 dollars. Male, and it would be neutered. We're willing to pay for shipping costs, too, but it seems we just have a hard time getting into contact with the breeders themselves.
So I was wondering if anyone knows any breeders located in Minnesota, or if you've purchased from a breeder willing to ship out of state if you could give me their webpage info that'd be great.
Thanks!
(I've used puppyfind, pets4you and all sorts of search engines but it seems to be a harder breed to find than I'd ever imagined!)
5 AnswersDogs1 decade agoSurrendering birds, need advice, please (MN area)?
I have four parakeets (budgies) and two cockatiels. I love them very, very much. But with the sudden economy collapse, I need to move in the next few months. I'm not even guaranteed to have a job when I move and I've heartbreakingly decided that I perhaps need to surrender my birds.
I live in New Ulm, MN and I am looking for websites/addresses of bird rescue groups. My birds were just kept in a giant aviary like cage and while the cockatiels are semi-tame and can be handled the budgies are not. I worry about trying to just sell them in the local paper to people who don't understand the risks involved or may just get frustrated that they're not the greatest "pets".
Still hoping my luck will change before August, but I want to research now. Have you ever surrendered a bird? What was the process like?
4 AnswersBirds1 decade agoIs God bound by the laws of his own nature?
Someone in an answer said:
God doesn't roll dice to figure anything out. He already knew where we would be, what we would be doing, etc before He ever created the Universe.
He also knew, in advance, that most people would not follow His plan for their lives, and instead live out their own plans. But, He loves them just the same.
Omnipotent means "all powerful"......God is also omnipresent (which means "everywhere, all at once"), and omniscient (which means He "knows everything about everything").
His omniscience is the reason why He doesn't need to roll the dice to figure anything out......because He already knows the past, present, and future of everyone and everywhere.
--------------------------------------
Does this mean that God himself, should he exist, has no free will? Knowing everything means he would be bound to make (or let) things happen as they are predestined. Such as the argument of can he make a rock so heavy he cannot lift it, etc. God cannot do things outside of his nature, yet it would seem his nature is severely limited. If he exists, I doubt he could be all-powerful at all. He would just be a conduit for some other forces at play, greater than himself. That would explain why he made humans, knowing they would for the most part betray him. If he really loved them, he would not create them knowing they would be punished for eternity and he could prevent it.
But perhaps, being bound by his own nature, he does love people yet cannot interfere in the least. It would make sense with all the contradictory things he's done and said.
16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoFavorite "must see" Disneyworld (FL) restaurants?
Alright! I'm trying to plan a trip to Disneyworld Florida. I'll be going with my beloved and he hates planning so I'm trying to put together a list of 20 restaurants for him to look over. We'll be going for 7 days.
So tell me which restaurant you loved and would go to again, and why. :)
We're willing to try any kind of cuisine for any price. It will only be him and myself, and we would prefer something where we could sit down and eat. We really want it more for the experience, so dinner/shows are great, too! But something with a unique kind of flair would be awesome.
The Disney website is a little aggravating to navigate and kind of slow, so far all I really have are the Spirits of Aloha dinner show, the Moroccan belly-dancing restaurant, and am looking for the one where you eat seafood and are surrounded by a giant aquarium, I think in Epcot.
If you have one favorite, or a few, I'm open to any and all suggestions! Thanks in advance!
12 AnswersOrlando1 decade agoQuestion about preventing the spread of illness at animal shelters and home?
Hello! I'm going to be volunteering in an animal shelter and tomorrow is my first day. I know a few of the animals need medications multiple times a day for various sicknesses/health issues..and that some are in isolation until the contagious things (like ear mites, fleas, ringworm, etc) have been cured.
They have disinfectant at the shelter, and we'll be using it after handling each animal/cage/room...and I bought clothes I will only wear at the shelter, and plan to wash them immediately upon coming home. Smocks are also available.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other tips to help make sure I don't spread germs from one animal to another, including the ones I have at home. Thanks. :)
2 AnswersOther - Pets1 decade agoI need help in what to do about someone who constantly tries to 'convert' me to Catholicism...?
Alright, this is a little awkward of a situation. I'm 22, and I live with my friend and his parents. His parents, I'm sure, KNOW we (both my friend and I) are atheist. Christmas is a hard time of year for me. The person who raised me died years back, I have no family (thus living with these people), and I'm atheist/more fond of paganism values.
Yet with the holidays approaching, things feel like they get worse and worse. I have a hard time saying anything, because both their lives revolve around Catholicism and the Church. I make sure to never bring it up, since MY beliefs are my own and private and I see no reason to antagonize them.
But as I said, it gets harder and harder. Especially since I feel the holidays are a slap in the face to my mixed Cherokee and Nordic roots. I feel that Christmas is secular now, but that it was originally "heathen" holidays that were converted to make the public respond more easily to the Christian faith.
I'm celebrating winter solstice today, but in the last week I have been given a book that basically told me the purpose of Christmas and my life was meaningless without God. I kept my mouth shut. Today I had something on my door about the Star of Bethlehem and metaphors about the Wisemen having the right attitude about Jesus before he was even born...and again today I got an article sent to my email from these people. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122963990662019887...
Which points out a few things about how Christians can believe in fairy tales, but atheists can't...and Mr. Dawkins wants to kill off Harry Potter and that atheists disapprove of reading fairy tales to children.
I'm at my limit. I'm moving out next summer or so, but I get dragged into the holidays here against my will (even after stating I don't celebrate them)...should I just keep my mouth shut? Or should I speak up and explain my stance and that these helpful things they send me only make me more depressed, because I can't stand all the misunderstandings?
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoAre you prepared to keep your pets safe this holiday season? :)?
It's one of the busiest times of the year, including the vets for animals injured, lost, or poisoned during the holidays.
You want to make sure pets are warm, safe, secure, and if possible unstressed! This list I found on Yahoo! News and I think everyone who has cats/dogs should look over it once more before the holidays are in full swing. (It's just general good advice for the rest of the year, too!)
May you and your beloved beasts have a very merry holiday season, whatever you do or don't celebrate. :)
4 AnswersOther - Pets1 decade agoWhat to ask/what to expect at the dentist first time?
Hello! I was only ever taken to the dentist once when I was little to have some teeth removed. But my parents couldn't afford dental care, and I've just turned 22 and can barely afford it myself...but I know it needs to be done.
I've noticed I have some cavities, mostly on my back wisdom teeth. I don't have any tooth pain, the wisdom teeth had plenty of room when they grew in...I don't think I need a root canal, but I don't know how I can even tell!
But at any rate, I could use some help. I want to call the local dentist (I have no insurance, though) and talk to them. I'm not sure what questions to ask...other than to say: "I've never been to a dentist, help!"
Is there anything specific I should ask to be done? Any information I should be sure to have? It -seems- that on average the exams cost about 150 dollars, give or take. But what exactly do they do?
If I've never been, should I ask for molds or X-rays? Or should I just let them poke around and hope for the best? I'm really nervous....but I don't want to have bad breath from the cavities and would rather get them fixed sooner than later.
Crowns, fillings, root canals? It's all so confusing!
5 AnswersDental1 decade agoCan someone please translate these Finnish lyrics? (Eriskummainen Kantele)?
The song is called Eriskummainen Kantele, or "My Kantele".
I know the kantele is a string musical instrument. I LOVE this song, but I can't find an english translation. It almost sounds like a lullaby.
Ne varsin valehtelevat,
tuiki tyhjeä panevat,
jotka soittoa sanovat,
arvoavat kanteletta
Väinämöisen veistämäksi,
Jumalan kuvoamaksi,
hauin suuren hartioista,
veen koiran koukkuluista.
Soitto on suruista tehty,
murehista muovaeltu:
koppa päivistä kovista,
emäpuu ikipoloista,
kielet kiusoista kerätty,
naulat muista vastuksista.
Sentä ei soita kanteleeni,
ei iloitse ensinkänä,
soitto ei soita suosioksi,
laske ei laatuista iloa,
kun on huolista kuvattu,
murehista muovaeltu.
5 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoName Change, looking for how to contact the IRS (state and federal taxes)?
I just got my name legally changed earlier this week (not by marriage or divorce, but an actual court order).
I'm looking for forms or mailing addresses to send my certifified copies of the name change to both the federal tax authorities and the state of Minnesota tax authorities.
If anyone can provide me with the mailing address, and/or a link to the forms I need to fill out- it'd be greatly appreciated!
6 AnswersUnited States1 decade agoCan you help me choose a bird cage?
Alright, I am about to move and need some help getting a bird cage. I have two cats, a dog...and then 3 parakeets and 2 cockatiels (I know it's recommended you don't house these birds together, but they've all bonded as a flock and for three years have never harmed each other).
The problem is, right now I was able to keep the birds in the computer room, seperate from the other animals. Where I'm moving, that won't be an option.
I'm looking into acrylic bird cages, and I only have about 700 dollars maximum to spend...I'm at a loss of what to do, if possible I'd rather not give up the birds (except as a last resort, because I'd rather they be SAFE.
These are the only two acrylic webpages I've found...
http://www.acrylicbirdcages.com/
http://www.kingsolomoncages.com/default.asp
The birds all seem to congregate at the top of their current 3 foot tall cage, so I was thinking something wider this time. What dimensions should I get? Do you know of any other places I could buy?
