Just got new license plates with different numbers (MN) is this correct?

I'm in Minnesota and I ordered new tabs for my license plates. I bought the car about 3-4 years ago and so don't know if the license plates had been renewed a few years before (since they're changed every 7 years).

I had the license plate number from the car dealership that was on it and for the last few years simply got new stickers. But these year I got a completely new license plate pair in the mail. The letter mentions the new plate number and my new registration card, but then lists the previous plate number, too.

I suppose I've just never gotten plates with a completely different number and I just kind of want to double check that this is normal or not. If they sent me the registration card showing the change of plate numbers I should be ok, right?

And what do I do with the old plates? ..I don't even know how to change them, lmao...

Update:

Yea, this didn't have a return envelope and it was my first time ever getting new plates so I just get nervous about these kind of things.

Some States Change the Style of the License plate, or picture it has on it, and will issue new plates. If they do not provide for you to return the old plates, you can keep them or cut them up with metal shears.

you should be OK. I thought that they send an envelope to return the old plate, but it has been awhile.
