Question about preventing the spread of illness at animal shelters and home?
Hello! I'm going to be volunteering in an animal shelter and tomorrow is my first day. I know a few of the animals need medications multiple times a day for various sicknesses/health issues..and that some are in isolation until the contagious things (like ear mites, fleas, ringworm, etc) have been cured.
They have disinfectant at the shelter, and we'll be using it after handling each animal/cage/room...and I bought clothes I will only wear at the shelter, and plan to wash them immediately upon coming home. Smocks are also available.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other tips to help make sure I don't spread germs from one animal to another, including the ones I have at home. Thanks. :)

I used to work at a shelter too - probably you will be only with the vaccinated animals not the strays who have not been checked by a vet..
keep your pets vaccinated is a good start!
most shelters use BLEACH to clean the rooms and things will..
the smocks are a good idea.. if a kitty sneazes on you and you have cats at home make sure you wash
if you have dogs - you might want a change of shoes to prevent risk of PARVO

Always wear the smocks, and make sure to wash your hands and use disinfectant before returning home. Could you leave these shelter clothes at the shelter? You could take a shower once you get home too, but I think you'll be fine as is.
