What makes a cake topper just that, can something else be used?

I'm getting married in the next few years and have my heart set on a dragon cake topper, but have only really been able to find a few and none of which I like. There was one I saw a while back from a specialty online store with two dragons nuzzling on top of a grassy hill that could be painted any colors you'd like but I since lost the website and have no luck in finding it again.

But it got me thinking, what makes a cake topper....a cake topper? If I got some figurines I liked, would I be able to use those? Does it need to be a certain way to be put atop a cake? Or will anything flat bottomed/can be sunk in slightly work?

A cake topper is just something on top of a cake. But let logic reign. Heavy doesn't work, significantly larger than the cake doesn't work, and of a soft texture doesn't work. So no giant stuffed animal from a carnival holding some mercury. Just finding some light weight figurines would be perfect.

Found a beautiful one, dragons tails entertwined to make a heart---silver/pewter---$47.00 SKU# X258 also matching knife and cake server for $105.95------------topper is 7 and 1/2 inches across but base is smaller and the edge will be covered with frosting. Site is http://www.weddingcollectibles.com/

also dragon wedding cakes at http://www.cakes-perfect-wedding-day.com/ may have got spaces wrong so play around with

Just went to Yahoo dragon wedding cake toppers, may find more. Good luck.

A cake topper is just that - something you put on top of a cake. You can use anything you want, just make sure that it's not so heavy it sinks into the cake.

i saw something in a bridal magzine a while back and someone had take a 4 sided picture frame (like one youd set on your desk at work) and had put pics of the bride and groom in it and made it a cake topper. super cute idea. a cake topper can be anything you want it to be.

it should be flat bottomed. not too large and light if its heavy it may sink into the cake.
