How can I make homemade dirt cheaply?
I have a ton of plants to re-pot before bringing them in the house this winter. I have a low budget and I was wondering if there was anyone who knew how to make homemade dirt, dirt cheap (ha ha).
Thank you for all your help
Sincerely,
Rachel

Oh Boy, you will have to make compost. Compost is the very best "dirt" for pots, raised beds and gardens in general. You can make it for free- 1000 percent!!! I swear by it!
If you have a Barnes and Noble bookstore near you you can look thru' a book called "the rodale book of composting" to give you a quick easy guide to making compost. Or "Mike McGraths guide to Compost" I have read maybe 15 or more books on the subject and these two are the best. (A few of them were really bad and offered terrible advice) but these two were very good. You don't even need to buy them, just sit there and read thru' them to give you the ideas...
Chances are you already discard all of the materials you need. Leaves, grass, the salad you ddin't finish, apple cores, bananna peels.... and COFFEE grinds... (the very best additive).
And, aside from being free- making compost is easy. It's also healthy- no chemicals and removes material from your trash and ultimately the landfill.
However, the only catch- at best, you need at least one month to make some, maybe longer for the first time due to some trial and error.
This may not work for you this year but you can start this year.
PS- You may not want to repot your plants now anyway. You don't want to encourage growth over the winter, you may be better off waiting till Spring or late Winter.
PSS- You may already know it, but just digging dirt from the backyard will not work very well.
Send me an email and I'll give you all the general advice you need for composting as well, less buying the darn books which are around 10 to 20 bucks.

Though compost isn't exactly dirt, soil is made in the woods from organic matter deteriorating. There for consider having a compost bin and making your own organic soil next year.
