Just rented Army of Two (Xbox 360). Can two people play this game from the same console?

I understand the goodness factor of playing with folks online, but can two people in the same house play from the same console? My boyfriend and I could be doing something wrong, but this was the reason we rented the game - to play together. Because we rented it from Blockbuster, there is no game guide as with buying the actual game.

Update:

I am finding information online that says YES you can play via the Split Screen mode, but nothing that says HOW. Not sure what I am doing wrong here as we've tried but it keeps saying a player is not signed in. Should both players have Live IDs?

Yes, you both have to have GamerTags. Select Split Screen, there should be a button that shows at the bottom of the screen telling you what to push to sign in another person.
