Catfish to catch Catfish ? ?
I fish for Catfish allot especially this time of year as they move shallow and are ravenous in anticipation of winter.I usually use Cut Bait, yesterday I was using cut Silver Bass and did quite well (I caught 11 Catfish and kept 7) I released the larger ones and kept the smaller 12"to 15" Cats for the freezer. As I was cleaning the fish I thought about using some Cut Catfish as bait I was wondering if anyone has tried it ? and What success you had / Should I stick to the tried and true Cut Baits(Shad,Suckers,Silver Bass,Bluegill etc...) ? What's been your experience?

You seem to be knowledgeable enough to know a catfish will eat just about anything, especially towards the Fall of the year. Using cut bait is going to produce good results provided the cats are in a feeding mode however whatever is on hand for bait would give better results with whatever is natural to the waters being fished. As far as using another catfish for bait, well I have used the organs like heart & liver but never used the flesh for cut baits.

I've used catfish as cutbait and it works well. I'll fillet a 1-2 pound cat and then cut some of the meat along the spine for bait. I've used entralls before, too, and they work (although the turtles love that). I think the tail would be good for cut bait, but haven't used it. When I use cutbait I usually stick with bluegill, though. I prefer live bait and dip bait to cut bait, but you gotta go with what the fish are biting. My grandpa used dead chicks (he raised chickens) on a trot line.

Once I was night fishing at a catfish pond. There was a young man that caught a small catfish, about 5" long. He got all excited and I remember thinking it didn't take much to make him happy! Well he used the catfish as bait and managed to catch three monster cats in about an hour. One went over 30 lbs. So I guess they do like their own kind.

Sure, Ido not think they can tell the difference between these types of bait. Meat is meat

The "Cats" are willing feeders and I have seen and heard of them being caught on a number of unusual offerings including hot-dogs, bologna lunch meat, chewing gum, cigarette filters, etc. I'd try just about anything once, and I am confident that any fish scraps would rank high on their list of favorites....even from their cousin 'cats. Go for it!
