Has Windows Vista come far enough for me to switch from XP?

I am considering the purchase of a new computer that has Vista. However, I have adobe premiere 6.5 and other expensive programs that I don't know will work with this new OS. I know that it has had some problems in the past with compatibility of pre-Vista software, but has Microsoft resolved most of these issues?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Not now, not if you don't have to...

If you can't avoid getting Vista because you're buying a new computer, you might get lucky and wind up with no problems at all, but I would keep a copy of XP handy just in case. (Although the idea of getting rid of Vista altogether is daunting since it costs an arm and a leg when you by it separately.)

If you CAN avoid it, stay with XP for a little longer and keep an ear to the ground for news of solid improvements before you upgrade. (Wired, PC World...)

Microsoft is aware of the problems, and they are working on them - hence all of the updates - but us users are still going through changes in the meantime. Eventually you'll have to upgrade, but just be aware of the possible issues.

I've been in Vista hell for the last month since I got my new computer. Service Pack 1 for Vista came equipped with a ton of bugs and issues. Everytime I turn on automatic updates, I come back later to an updated machine that has some mysterious malfunction like devices that used to work which don't anymore. I freeze in the middle of reboots. I've had to restore my computer to an earlier point countless times just to get into the OS, and I've rolled back the computer to factory settings twice - and I haven't even installed any software yet.

Whenever I look online for any indication as to what the problem could be, the information I find points to Vista and it's various bugs and updates. Vista has lots of driver conflict issues too.

BTW... I use Adobe products at home and at work - the software will work with Vista because Adobe products are fully supported - if you can get to the point of actually installing and using them. My Dad has had different Vista related issues than I have had, but he's been able to use all of his Adobe software with no problem. At work, the IT department has not transitioned us to Vista yet because of the bugs and problems. I actually have to reinstall XP on my old machine at home just to get any work done while I wait for MS to get their act together with Vista.

One tip: Manually install SP1 updates only a few at a time. That way, when you run into an issue, you can roll back to the previous installation and isolate the problem.

Good luck with your computer purchase, and be informed:

I would recommend moving to Vista with SP1 . Almost all computers come with it. It is very stable now ,as most issues have been resolved.

We live in a Vista world now, so give it a try. I have had , ultimate, basic and premium for over a year and have no issues whatsoever. It is actually safer than XP, believe it or not.

Keep XP. The new version of windows will be out in a year or 2 and then maybe upgrade. There's no good reason at all to upgrade to vista right now.

nope keep XP, vista has the dmw.exe which take up a sh*tload of memory from your pc, plus XP is alot easier to navigate, Vista just looks better thats all

I have vista and I am fixing to have to reinstall it due to unexplained errors. However, I do know that you can buy a new computer but download xp on it. Hope this helps -Denise
