neither canon nor nikon makes the best lenses. They are about the same. For quality glass, most professionals look at Schneider, Zeiss, and Leica and today, you find those lenses in interesting places. Samsung supplies Schneider lenses with their DSLRS, Sony's lenses are Zeiss, and Panasonic's are Leica.
There would be no differences in quality for Pentax either. Olympus, by the way, is the only lens manufacturer that uses only glass and no plastic lenses in their photographic lenses.

First off not all photojournalists use Canon though many do. Whichever company has the latest greatest camera at the time is what the photographers use. Often times the publications that they work for own the cameras or at least the lenses.
As far as who makes better lenses the answer is really neither or both. They both make some of the finest lenses in the world. Nobody would be able to tell the difference without lab tests. Canon may make a ever so slightly better 70-200mm lens but Nikon may make a slightly better 400mm lens. It really doesn't matter both are great.

Well first off not all photojournalist shoot Canon. Most do, I figure that it's just a popular choice right now. Yes my friends, Nikon makes white colored lenses too. Like the other people said, there really isn't that much difference between the two. I couldn't tell you if somebody out there could look at a photo and tell you which normal lens brand was used. A lab probably could though. I have friend that says Nikon has superior optics and maybe the friend is right. I'm sure if all the camera owners were brought together they would all defend their choices.
There maybe one reason that sticks out above all others though and why Canon seems so popular and that is their mad scientist coming out with all these crazy lenses. They are a wild bunch that come up with outrageous idea's. If you visit their web site you can see what I mean.
I ended up choosing Nikon though because while they don't make as many lenses, what they do make is outstanding. Of course they still make many many lenses too.

Either brand is sufficient when you compare specs of the level of camera that best suits your needs. Unless you are partial to a particular brand due to use of either older models or film cameras where there exists a substantial investment in lenses, it really doesn't matter to be honest. If you are new to digital photography, don't waste time racking your brain about which one is better. The debate is moot as far as new photographers are concerned. I like both, and have owned both, and they both do the same thing in the end. I shoot with a nikon D80, a good friend of mine shoots with a canon rebel XTi. The rebel suits her needs because it's smaller and fits her hand better than my larger D80. I like the D80 because it's more intuitive and fits my hand better. They both have the same resolution and similar features. I think they're both pretty cool. In the hands of a professional, or someone otherwise knowledgeable enough to know the difference, each are suited to different needs. But, I don't get the impression that you fall into that category. So, go to a camera store and use the various demos available to you and choose the one that fits your needs and feels comfortable in your hands.

Back in the day the best lenses were Schneider and Zeiss, but between the 2 Nikon had the edge. These days they both use high quality design tools and manufacturing processes to produce amazing quality lenses. In reality the image resolution of either lens will far exceed the image resolution of any sensor on the market, so moot point.

Which car line is better chev or ford? Both are fine, you just have to find the one that works for YOU and learn the system inside and out. I shoot canon. I know how to shoot canon. I shoot canon well. I prefer it. I would be lost on a nikon. Does it make nikon bad? No, it just makes it not work as well for me because I don't want to learn a new system and replace everything I own. It doesn't matter WHAT you have as long as you work it to your best abilities.

Both make excellent lenses. Under strict, controlled conditions one lens might resolve 1,000 lines per inch while another will "only" resolve 998 lines per inch. About 99.9% of the time its impossible to tell the difference.
Forget about the tests and buy the best lenses you can afford and you'll be happy.
