California Penal Code specifically mentions swords in relation to cane swords where the sword is concealed as a cane. It also mentions knives repeatedly but primarily in relation to weapons that can be concealed. There is also mention of large fixed blade knives longer than 4" being illegal in public buildings, meetings and jail facilities.

Local authorities also have the ability to pass ordinances that can affect your rights but you'd have to research that city by city (LA in particular is pretty persnikity when it comes to knives).

In a nutshell it looks like it's legal as long as you're not trying to conceal it somehow. Regardless, I suspect you're going to get a hassle from police if you just walk around with it on your belt. Perhaps this is one of those things that "seemed like a good idea at the time"?

I dont think so you will be needing a sword for self defense. Not every time you can carry a sword, it is better to have basic things with you like a pepper spray or may be some tiquando steps. I think this will be heplful rather than carrying a sword.

It's actually not very legal to even to carry a regular knife around. Carrying any type of blade would have the police to pull up (not too close and with the windows up) since usually someone carrying sharp objects around like that aren't mentally stable. And the chances of someone "screwing" with you would actually raise depending in where you live. In a suburban area, scared parents and jail time. Urban ghetto, you shot and jail time. But I recommend cutting back the Japanese cartoons some. Just kidding. Haha.

Well, I don't see why you wouldn't just carry a gun, since swords are just a little bit out-fashioned :-).

I don't think it is legal, in many areas of the country you can't carry any weapons.

Wouldn't you get tired carrying a sword around? Wouldn't you just get shot in California? Is it remotely helpful to answer a question with three more questions?

This is just hilarious. Why would you want to carry a sword? Will all your friends that play WOW be carrying their swords too?

I believe the blade has to be shorter than 6 inches and must be worn visibly.
