Well if you have a Nikon camera, you'll need a Nikon lens, if you have a canon camera, you need a canon lens. There are 3rd party lenses for each mount (canon or nikon)
But I'm assuming he is talking about a nikon camera with a 20mm lens. Well you'll here some people that are big Nikon or Canon die hards. For 80% of consumers, there probably isn't much difference (I've used both, I currently use Nikon)
That aside, a 20mm lens is a wide angle lens. It is best used for landscape or photography where you need a wide field of view (google wide angle lens if you want a more technical explaination) A "Standard" lens for a 35mm camera is usually a 50mm. Most consumer grade DSLR's will have smaller sensors and 50mm would actually be a slight zoom lens. If you are doing general photography.. I would probalby opt for general use wide angle zoom lens like a 18-105mm That should cover most of what you'll do in a photography class.

OK, with a name like - playboy_carioca - I have to ask, are you going to college for - studying - or - studding - ?? These are by far two different words with different meanings, however in college, they both could be true. ??!!
Your question tho. He most likely said Nikon because it is HIS favorite brand of camera. A 20mm lens is a 20mm lens, on any name brand of 35mm camera. The quality of some name brands may show better than on others, but the lens coverage - what they see - will be the same.
I will have to say tho, a Nikon 20mm lens most likely will be sharper from corner to corner than anyone else's other than Canon, unless you go Leica or find Contax equipment. Original name brand equipment.
But no, I do not believe Nikon is that superior to Canon or the other way around, both are superb cameras and offer excellent optics as well, and each has a fine reputation.. Just watch your reputation as your - studding around - the college campuss.... ;-)

I have a Canon FD mount(manual focus) 20mm 2.8 that's about 25 years old.
In my experience, it's a wonderful lens-far better than I am a photographer.
In general, the difference between brands, particularly for prime lenses, is not worth splitting hairs over.

in the DSLR classification, there are not any lenses that are dedicated to a undeniable digicam. So there are not any D40 lenses, or D90 lenses. There are digicam bodies and lenses, and the comparable 18-fifty 5 lens is used on fantastically much all of Nikon's get right of entry to point cameras. subsequently you will discover the comparable 18-55mm lens used on your D40 on a D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, and D5100. whilst the D90 and D7000 "kits" (digicam plus lens from the manufacturing unit) incorporates an upgraded 18-105mm lens, there is not any reason you are able to not purchase a D90or D7000 physique and use the 18-55mm lens on the two your D40 and the D90. the only project with Nikon lenses is that a number of them won't autofocus on the D40, yet will autofocus on the D90 or D7000. it is because of the fact the D90 and D7000 are stepped forward amateur cameras and have extra skill then the get right of entry to point cameras. They incorporate an inner concentration motor that the D40 and different get right of entry to point cameras lack. some lenses (AF) require the digicam's autofocus motor, whilst different lenses (AF-S) have their very own outfitted-in autos so they do no longer % the digicam's motor. So some lenses that autofocus on a D90 or D7000 won't autofocus on a D40, yet any lens which will autofocus on a D40 will autofocus on a D90 or D7000. yet different than the autofocus project, any Nikon F-Mount lens will paintings on any Nikon DSLR. wish it truly is clever.
