High school football questionable call?

I was at a game last Friday. One team was punting. The punt was high, and a player from the receiving team ran back near the returner who just called fair catch. the player who ran back (from the same team) toward the punt returner got too close, and the ball bounced off his helmet before the catch was made. Another player from the receiving team tried to pick up the ball, fumbled, and the kicking team recovered. The referee called the ball back and made them re-kick, I'm guessing because they didn't know what to do....

What's the right call on that kind of play???

Update:

There was plenty of booing going around after that.

Update 2:

There were no flags on the play.

I'm guessing that one of the officials seeing the fair catch signal was ready to kill the play and blew his whistle too early. This called an "inadvertent whistle."

The rules are very clear that if an inadvertent whistle happens during a legal forward pass or a legal kick (the ball was still technically a "kick" because no one had actually secured possession yet). The only option is to replay the down.

I'm sure that with all of the crowd noise at the time, most people in the stands did not hear the whistle. That only makes things more confusing for the fans.

Yes, it's a crappy deal. Especially for the team that recovered. Inadvertent whistles are the cardinal sin of football officiating.

That was a fumble and a bad call on the referee. The referees sometimes do not see all actions. That is when the coach can step in and challenge their bad calls. Yeah I would have at least gone with a 1st down kicking team if all else.

Kicking teams ball. Unless there was a flag like offsides or something that would negate the play and rekick marking off the pentalty, but if there was no pentalty then bad call. If you think thats bad then listen to this.

I am a high school coach and last week we played a team that is all white. My school is a mix of black white, and other races. All game my players get called the N word by the other players. Then when my DB hits a player hard near there sideline the opposing coach says "You hit like a B i t c h" well my big black LBer did not like that and walked towards the bench and gets this sayed to him by a COACH " Get Back to the huddle Ni..." So my LBer is mad, but turns around and says to his own team "Lets GO, LETS GO" the official called unsportsmanlike on my guy. It was like this ALL game and we have filed a greifence. REFS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Source(s): High School coach Actually Daniel K MY guy did nothing wrong. He did not leave the field of play and was just walking towards the sideline where the play was ending and there was a pile up. He did not say a word, but was looking at the racist coach and was making sure that nothing else was going on after the play that could get his team in trouble. If you think a flag should be thrown for making sure your team keeps it cool and looking at a opposing coach and then wlking away and trying to fire up your OWN team after being called a racial slur then you my friend are an idiot. And I was actually impressed with my players for not getting in more trouble considering fans, coaches and players where shouting the N word at us at halftime and 2 players on there team had cast on that was never inspected by the officials or no paper work was filed(In the state I coach those two things have to be done) so the players decided to punch my guys instead of tackling them. I guess the officials got something right because they ejected one kid doing this.

I would guess that there was an inadvertant whistle. Sometimes crap happens, and the only thing you can do is replay the down.

Cmow5, I don't buy that. I played on a mixed team, and when we played all white teams that used the "N-word" on us, it was to bait us into doing something that could be penalized. The kid had no business approaching the opponent's sideline, and he should have been flagged. If you want to make a statement about race, win the game with dignity, and let the good ol' boys leave licking their wounds.

Bad call, its a fumble it and the punting team should have had a 1st down.

I'm guessing Hochuli was reffing. It should be a fumble and the kicking team got robbed.

I'm guessing that the coach of the receiving team got some advice from me..

This call is so obvious it makes me think there must have been another problem. Are you sure the refs didn't blow the play dead before the ball was snapped?
