From vantage north of Detroit I saw...?

a very bright light, south by south-west at about 40* I'm pretty sure it was either Venus or Jupiter but no planet appeared on the star-map I consulted. Further complicated by heavy light pollution and thus very few other stars to compare.

Anyone else see what i'm talking about or have better star-maps available? This was easily one of the brightest things in the sky even with the light-pollution.

Update:

Thank-you for the quick answers, it was fixed and very obviously not a satellite.

I also appreciate the club offer but that is a really long drive for me, we have a club up this way too.

Maybe i'll dust off the 8 incher tonight.

Thanks again!

    Jupiter.

We're having a Beginner's night at Lake Erie Metropark a week from Sunday, October 4th. It's free, open to the public. Maybe 7 pm.

I'll show up, if i'm over my cold. Maybe even if not.

Jupiter has been extremely bright in the south west for the last few weeks, so if the light you saw was fixed and held its position for a few minutes, then it was Jupiter. If it moved across the sky taking about a minute to do it, then it was a satellite, probably an Iridium satellite.

  • how many second could you see it?was it moving?but in my opinion it was a satellite(an iridium one)that its magnitude reaches to -8 sometimes.
