help me! How can i calm my puppy down to brush her teeth?
I have a 6 month old Shih Tzu. My vet had told me and gave me an information sheet on dental disease in dogs, and told me i should brush my dogs teeth starting out as a puppy, and to try doing this every day!
Well, i just recently started this a few days ago and she will not have it! At first i put a little bit of the doggie toothpaste on the brush and let her kinda play with it n chew on it to get used to it in her mouth. Once i tried to get it on her teeth to brush there was NO WAY she was going to let me keep doing it! she will wiggle, squirm, do any thing to pull away!
I know dental health is important expecially for shih tzu's! i would like to brush her teeth at least every other day!! So PLEASE help if you have any tips or ideas to make her calm down a little so i can get all of her teeth brushed, it will be greatly appreciated!! :)

Well, my Mutt is a really calm dog, so he let me do it. I started doing it when he was 7. I didn't know you were supposed to brush dog's teeth until last year. I don't know what you should do about your pup, but you can take her to the groomers and have it done, though it may be more expensive. If you feed only dry food and only crunchy or jerky-like treats, your dog will be Ok with only getting brushed once a week. Just take her to the groomers, they are professionals and know how to do this. Just make sure they don't use tranquilizers. Sorry I don't have any other info to give you. :)

Our dogs, we didn't use a toothbrush first. We used our finger! They got used to the feeling of something in their mouth, wiggling around with the paste on, then we were able to slip a scrubber over our fingers to help along with the feel, then used the brush.
At the same time, we also buy raw meaty bones from the butcher shop every couple weeks. Knuckle bones are great, we buy shin bones, beef. The meat left on is great for their belly and it helps floss their teeth. Gnawing on the bone helps to scrape off the plaque as well! It's bloody, so it's best to give this treat outside, in a crate, or on an easily mopped floor. You can even set out an old blanket for her to eat it on if she won't carry it around the house like my pups will.
ADD: By the way, you do need to brush their teeth. My 14 year old dog's teeth are all worn down, chipped, cracked, falling out. She started to develop plaque by 3 and cavities by 6. She may not cry, but I can tell by the way she eats it hurts. I wish wish wish we had taken better care of her mouth.

I have a westie who loves to have his teeth brushed, but I have had dogs that hate it. Wait until she is tired. She won't want to fight as much. You might only be able to brush a little at a time, take little breaks. tell her she is a good girl and talk to her in a calming voice. They also have really good dental bones. They work really well. If you can't brush her teeth with a brush, the bones are the next best thing.

I have had dogs for many years, none of them have had dental problem and I have never brushed their teeth.I give my dogs carrots and broccoli stalks to chew. I also give them compressed dry fish skins. I don't give the anything which contains beef, however dried tripe sticks help with cleaning.
I have had dogs which have lived until they were aged seventeen with perfect teeth. Do not worry if your dog does not want its teeth cleaning

i think if you brushed her teeth every other day you would end up irritating her gums. I think a cleaning from the vet once a year and good dog food will be more then enough to keep her teeth in good health. I wouldn't stress her out trying to brush them yourself. I tried to brush a shih tzus teeth (she is 11) and it proved to be impossible. But they definitely don't need it as often as you think.

My dog doesn't allow tooth brushing either. I use two products to help makeup for that. First, I put Oxyfresh in his drinking water. Then I feed him Science Diet D/T for treats. It is garbage food, but good for treats.
EDIT: the raw bone idea is a good one. Nylabones can splinter and damage the intestines - not a good idea.
