They might be digging in their ears with their paws, they might be more lethargic & if you smell their ears (gross i know - but...) they might stink. But the biggie is the digging/scratching IN their ears. You should be cleaning out their ears (with a q-tip) regularly (every other week or so) - dog's ears aren't like human ears - their ear canal bends at a 90 degree angle so you can't hurt them by putting the q-tip in too deep.
Source(s): We just got adopted two beagles and when i took them in for their first checkup they both had ear infections - our vet gave them medicine for their ears & showed us a model of the dog's ear & told us how to clean them & what to look for if they had ear infections again. - BurtLv 71 decade ago
Your dog will shake its head very often. That is a good sign of ear infection or ear mites. Maintain ears clean with a cotton swab and some over the counter alcohol, or there are many things at the pet store to clean dog ears

You check her ears to see if there is gunk in them, a bad odor, or if she seems to be shaking her head or trying to scratch her ears.
Could be ear mites or a fungus infection - either one you need to take her to the vet, have the problem identified and get the right medication.
Far easier just to keep her ears clean and dry. Floppy eared dogs tend to have more problems, so it's important to clean and dry the ears every time you bathe your dog.

They will scratch at their ears or try to rub them on the ground most often. Also watch for her to stop eating/drinking or being lazy, those can often be signs something is wrong but an ear infection would be very very serious at the point they would go off food or water.

Our cocker's were always very sensitive when it came to their ears if they were bothering them. They would roll their head on the ground in an attempt to scratch their ears. They would also whine when scratched behind the ears if their was a problem.

Head shaking, pawing at their ears, any wetness/drainage from the ear(discoloration of fur by ears), or rubbing their head/ears against things. You may also notice an odor.

She'd be scratching her ears, shaking her head..... or maybe even rubbing her ears on the carpet or grass or something.
