Like most religious symbols, the Jesus fish has long been a part of history. The yin-yang symbol is a stylized representation of two fish. In pagan cultures, it represents a woman's womb - a sign of fertility. In babylonian myth, a fertility goddess Atargatis gave birth to a son called Ichthus, which is greek for fish. You may have seen the Jesus fish with the greek letters in it? ÎΧÎΥΣ (Ichthus) It means fish. Jesus was obsessed with fish, as well, calling himself a fisher of men. And, of course the two-fish-five-loaves-of-bread miracle. Also, Jesus' birth heralded the Age of Pisces, which is symbolized as two fish. Facing to the left, the fish also represents the greek letter alpha - which as god said he was the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. The later fish Goddess, Aphrodite Salacia, was worshipped by her followers on her sacred day, Friday. They ate fish and engaging in orgies. In later centuries, the Christian church adsorbed this tradition by requiring the faithful to eat fish on Friday - a tradition that was only recently abandoned.

Early Christians used the fish symbol cos the ancient greek word for fish is an acronym for the words 'Jesus Christ is God’s Son, the Savior' in ancient Greek. It is also symbolic of being baptised.
Also when early Christians were persecuted to identify each other one would scrape his foot in the dirt leaving a curve, if the the other person was also christian he would then scrape his foot and form a fish like shape (in a form like you see on those bumper stickers).
I think its a much nicer symbol for Christianity than using the piece of equipment that was used to kill him. If Jesus was hung would you guys be using the gallows as a symbol for Christianity...?

I can't give you a source but it had to do with christianity being banned- People walking by eachother on the street would draw have of the fish in the dirt. If the passerby finished the fish, they knew they were christian, if they just drew some squiggley thing, they were not. It was a way to hold secret meetings and find other christians.

It is the zodiacal sign for the age of Pisces, And people that used it 2000 years ago as the Sun began rising in Pisces, were looking for the King of that age. Early Christians used it as a secrete symbol to recognize each other, because Christianity was considered treason in Rome.

It is only a symbol. It has been used by some Christians for many years to signify that they are Christians, much the same as the cross is a symbol of their belief in Jesus.

Look at it this way. If it were a bumper sticker, it would read: "I have a piece of crap car. Hopefully you will pay attention to this little stick figure fish instead of the rusty bumper hanging off the back of this crapmobile".

It evolved from Jesus trilobite, and eventually evolved into Jesus monkey. After a couple hundred more years of evolution(error ratio: +/- 4 million years), it eventually became Jesus man(son of).
