Any suggestions?? my dog swallowed a mouse!!!?
I have a 6 mo. shih tzu puppy. I was getting ready, and went to check up on her to make sure she was okay, as always. I noticed she was chewing on something, and it looked like some kind of mouse!!! i tried removing it from her mouth, but she swallowed it WHOLE!
DONT WORRY!! I already called the vet right after it happend, he told me to keep a close eye on her, make sure she doesnt get sick, and can still pass her poo. He said she should beable to digest it, but could have a possibility of contracting a parasite like round worm or tape worm if the mouse had it.... so dont worry i already called and notified the vet and got information...
My question is... does anyone have any suggestions on how i could possibly make it easier for her to digest a mouse? I mean it doesnt sound that easy! I was thinking just make sure she drinks a lot of water, but is there maybe something else i could give her other then her food n water that'll break it down easier? if you have any tips or ideas they'd be greatly appreciated!!! :) thanks

Too much cheese will harden the stool, not soften it,
You've already spoken to a vet. Take the advise you already paid 3x too much for. I'm in vet school and I'll tell you, sometimes you have to just let go and let the animal take care of itself. Keeping an eye on her is the only thing you should be doing, until you see signs of struggle.
This is a great resource for lots of kinds of advise, but it's no substitution for the opinion of a professional and it's usually completely off base.

You don't have to give her anything.Dogs have very strong digestive acids, and they will break down a mouse just like they would a bowl of dog food.Foxes, coyotes and wolves wil swallow a mouse whole, too. She might pass some fur in her stool, but everything else should get digested.Just hope that the mouse wasn't poisoned.

she will be able to digest a mouse.. its extra protien. Dogs were designed to eat raw meat and bones.
Your vet was erring on the safe side when he told you to make sure she still passes poo.
About the worst she will get is worms... there is a small chance of catching lepto as well.
ADDED
Do not purposly feed her alot of fruits to give her soft stool.. you're vet's concern was for blockage, not constapation! You could throw her digestive system out of whack if you purposly give her diareah! If a dog gets a blockage, it doesnt matter what you feed! The mouse will not cause blockage tho, she should digest it just fine!

She will be fine, dogs are predators, so their digestive systems are designed to cope with prey (the mouse)
Your vet gave you the right advice. So I would go to him/her for worm treatment, just to be safe.
In the meantime give your pup lots of praise and a treat. Looks like you are gonna be mouse free from now on.

Miniature Pinschers were bred to independently hunt and kill small rodents, and this is very normal behavior for Min Pins and Min Pin mixes. The characteristic is bred into them, they have very very high prey drives. As long as these mice are not poisoned with anything, it shouldn't hurt her, just make sure you worm her regularly to prevent internal parasites. It is not bad for her stomach, and shouldn't pose a choking hazard as long as you don't disturb her while she's eating the mice, which will cause her to gulp them instead of ripping them into smaller pieces as she would if she did not feel threatened.

Raw diet.
In the wild, canines eat wild things whole. No need to worry.
Of course, if she starts acting strange, that could be a sign to pick up the phone and call the vet.

there is nothing extra you can do to help her digest a mouse. It will probably digest just fine. I would say don't worry at all. animals are hardier than we give them credit for.

You can make her pass it through easily, such as feeding her lots of cheese and fruits, which makes dogs poo soft. That is the best way! But listen to your vets advice. He gave you the correct advice and you shouldn't have to worry about anything.

She'll be fine. It's just (pardon the expression) fresh meat. It won't hurt her a bit.

Don't worry, mice are edible.
It would be part of their natural diet in the wild. Their systems are DESIGNED for mice.
