To the Jewish people here. What do you plan to do during the holidays?

One year, I got called upon to address the congregation on what being Jewish meant to me, and how it related to the High holidays. I got up and approached the podium and had decided to open with humor. I spoke about my New Year Eve plans and how to deal with the hangover the next day. So much for Rosh Hashana, and then I talked about my day long BBQ on Yom Kippur. I got a laugh, and then got serious. I actually enjoy the fast.

Now, to add to this, 1) there is a question above. 2) The people here, mostly the JPAA/JPA has renewed feelings of why I love being Jewish. Shabot Shalom. Happy Holidays.

Update:

I have such respect for all the answers here, I cannot pick one over the other. Bless you all.

    Shalom Songbyrd :)

I bet your speech was fab :)

I'm spending Rosh Hashanah in Synagogue, and then with family; there should be a big crowd of us, so it'll no doubt be organised chaos....! With enough food to feed a solar system. Just how I like it!!!

On Yom Kippur, Synagogue, naturally, and then breaking the fast with family; I have learned that it's better to eat lightly after fasting, and *try* to resist the temptation to eat too much!

I'm looking forward to eating honey cake on Rosh Hashannah; oh, how I lurrrrrrve it!

I wish you a SHANA TOVAH, and of course, Shabbat Shalom :)

Songbyrd, what a great question and I loved the story of what you said to the congregation. Well, what I'm planning to do is spend a good chunk of Rosh Hashana with an old friend who's moved away but will be back at our shul for the holiday. We'll go from the shul to a mega-lunch provided every year by our wonderful Chairperson, a seriously dynamic woman, and then we'll find somewhere for tashlich - we had a very wonderful tashlich together a few years ago, so there's a lot of fond memories with that. As for Yom Kippur - well, I am not being the best of Jews this year although I will be fasting. The thing is that I won't be at the Kol Nidre service because I will be at a (classical) concert and I'll be going straight from the end of services on the day to another concert - these are part of a series during the whole week, of my favourite composer. But it genuinely touches the same sort of spot in to hear that music as to be in shul.

And I share your feelings about the zest for Judaism that just lightens up my days, with the contributions from JPA members - and that includes the non-Jews, the Pagans and Christians and Hindus and others who take an interest in Judaism and provide interesting takes on their own paths. Shabbat shalom, L'shana tova and happy holidays.

Rosh Hashana, On Tuesday, I will take off from class and stay home. I will go to Shul for Shacarit. I will stay home and prepare a meal. Have a few over. Enjoy the holy day.

answer: I will be thinking of my Jewish friends and hoping the holy days go well. Congrats on being asked to address to congregation! And thank you for the kind words about the JPA. I can truthfully say that the JPA has also renewed my interest in spirituality and learning again. You've also shown me what Inter-faith working can be and that it's a good thing.

On the Holy Days, I'll star questions for my Jewish friends to catch when you're back on line.

May your name be inscribed in the book for a good year (and all our Jewish friends and contacts!)

    Great question!

On 1st day (Tuesday), I'll be going to shul for services. I'm also catering the sponsored kiddish.

After kiddish, my family and I will be going over to my best friend Leah's house for lunch. Services again in the evening.

2nd day (Wednesday) we will again be going to services, (small kiddish) and then going home for lunch. Dinner at home.

On Yom Kippur, we'll go to services in our non-leather, white clothing (I hate wearing white, makes me look plump, LOL). Then I'll go home for a shluff, then back to shul for evening services.

I love hearing the shofar blown - it will be fun.

I hope you have a happy, healthy and wealthy New Year - L'Shana tova.

By the way, if I have done anything to hurt your feelings or make you upset - will you please forgive me?
