Employers who provide domestic partnership benefits?
How does this work? I am hearing a lot of companies in my state starting to provide this but there are only a few counties that actually have domestic partner registries and whatnot. So how does this work in cities that don't have them, is it just up to the employer?
Are domestic partnerships kind of lenient to determine since there are not many registries, it seems like there can be numerous domestic partners and no one has "records" of anything but what someone claims? Is this how it is?
How do employers determine a domestic partnership in cities that do not have domestic partnership laws/registries? or whatever.

With my company, you just have to state that a person is your domestic partner based on certain conditions, such as sharing a residence and shared expenses. I live in a state that prohibits legal recognition of domestic partnerships, but my company still offers the benefits.
I don't think you have to show your marriage certificate to claim someone as your spouse, either. It is considered fraud to misrepresent your relationship to obtain benefits.
