You can try, but it might be a difficult process.
First of all, select a cutting about 6-8" long from the new growth. Remove all but one or two leaves, and make sure the cutting has at least one leaf node (the little bump where the leaf joined the stem). Get a small pot (about 4") and fill it with a good potting soil. I HATE Miracle Gro potting soil. Go to WalMart and look for a Schultz potting soil called "Expert Gardener Perfect Mix". It is sold in a 10 dry qt. bag for only $2.50.
Take the cutting and stick it into the pot, making sure at least one leaf node is under the soil (this is where the roots will form). Place the pot in a shady place (like underneath a tree) and keep it evenly moist. That is the trick--never let the pot dry out, but don't keep it soppy wet. Some people even enclose the whole cutting in a plastic bag to create a terrarium-like effect.
It should take four to six weeks for the cutting to root. To test, GENTLY tug on the cutting and see if you sense any resistance. If you do, the cutting is starting to root. I would keep it in the small pot until you see new leaves starting to form, and then, you can gradually move it up in size and when it reaches a good height, you can plant it in the yard, or just keep it as a potted plants.
Good luck, and I hope this information helps you.

yes you can but not so much as Truly as to call it root shooting its the same basics but the southern magnolia is a very difficult tree to grow the require a lot of space to grow but anyway you can only root shoot it from a leaft suclling from the trees base . start it in a glass of water and when the first sighn of roots apear than transplant it in to a pot of moist pete moss and top soil mix 'DO NOT ADD MIRACLE GROW. as this will kill the sapling.

wait till you see the seed pods and collect 2-3 of them ,let them dry out over winter and fluffy the pods next spring and get the seeds out then plant them
