Morally it's the right thing to do. If there wasn't identification of any kind on or with it, I'd be hesitant to take it to the police. The right thing to do is give it back, but everybody would claim it was theirs if word got out about a pot of gold being turned in to the police.

At the end of a rainbow, in a meadow, in Ireland ? No, I wouldn't give it back. Places as those are different, "magical". Though I've never experienced such places.
If found in an alley, in an abandoned car, etc., then yes, I'd "give it back". I'd turn it over to police authorities. If no one claims it at police station than it's mine, or at least some portion of it.
The attempt to find any properties rightful owner is right thing to do. I'd like same done for me if I lost something. I'd want it "given back" / returned to me.

it depends on where you found it.
i'd take a few gold pieces out before i'd give it back.
