We have a plasma tv, and the aspect ratio in widescreen is too wide. Is there some way I can adjust it?
In 3:4, we get a good picture, but in all of the wider screen options, people look a little squashed down, too short. the dealers are unable or unwilling to acknowledge any problem. Is there somebody who help me adjust it by myself? It is a Aansui, Flatview HDMI.
I do not have an HD decoder, Tex, so can only receive "normal" pictures, or else watch DVD's or connect a computer to watch movies that way. I will be happy to get an HD decoder. Trouble is, only some of our channels in are in HD, and the others look terrible in "zoom" mode. Do you think they may improve with an HD decoder? Mac, no wonder you call yourself Grumpy : ) I am, and have been, unable to make any adjustments to my TV (Sansui), just switch ratios by pressing the "size" button.

I don't know anything about your tv brand, but I am assuming it's an HD tv so:
If you are feeding the tv an HD signal, be sure the hd cable box or blu ray player is set to 16:9, and either 720p or 1080i for broadcast and 1080p for blu ray (whichever your tv's native resolution is). Then be sure the tv is set to the 16:9 also. And then set both the tv remote and the cable box to no zoom. Use either an HDMI or component (red/green/blue) cable for video and the picture should fit fine.
If you are not using any hd feeds and are using only a coax cable or yellow video cable, you need to upgrade to an hd source.

You have mucked with the "wider screen options" which is distorting the picture.
Change the aspect ratio (a button on the remote or in the TV setup menu under Video) to turn OFF all stretch modes.
Here is the problem:
- All HDTV TV shows are exactly 16:9 ratio and will fill the 'widescreen' format of your TV.
- Movies made for the theater have at least 9 different ratios and this causes black bars on the sides and top of the display when watching a DVD or a movie.
Since black bars upset "Joe SixPack" owners, the TV manufacturers include some 'stretch' modes to distort the image, but fill the screen.
You have obviously set the TV to one of these modes. Change it so that you turn off all of these modes and the images will be in the proper ratio.

A large quantity of widescreen televisions have the same exact problem, and as far as I know there is no way to fix it besides getting a different television.
