My Rogers Internet and Xbox 360 connection?

I don't know why but my internet connection is terrible. I live in the city and my connection almost never works. I have rogers high speed and it's almost always saying its not connected. I have a modem connected to a router and my xbox 360 connected to my router. connections are made by ethernet cords. On my modem it has 5 lights: pc, cable, send, receive, and power. The pc and power lights are always on, but the cable is never on. I have checked to see if there plugged in right and i have tried unplugging and plugging back in. When i go on the xbox 360 connection test it say i failed the DNS connection. What can i do to fix this problem?

Here is a quote from Microsoft.

"Shared connection with a modem and a routera. Try using only the modem to connect. This eliminates any configuration problems on the router.

If this setup works without the router, there is a configuration issue with the router. See the router documentation, or contact the technical support group.

    b. Examine the Dashboard to make sure that the DNS settings are set to Automatic.

    c. Use your router IP address for the DNS settings. Typically, this is the IP address that you use to administer the router. See your router manual for this address.

Because Xbox 360 sits on an internal network instead of sitting directly on the Internet, the router must perform all DNS searches because the console cannot access the Internet directly (unlike the direct connection method). When the Xbox 360 performs a DNS resolution search to locate the Xbox 360 servers, the Xbox 360 asks the router to perform a DNS search and to find the address of the XBL servers for the console because the console is on a home network instead of directly on the Internet.

    d. If you can connect to the network when you bypass your router, you may have to configure your router to allow for network communication on the specific ports that are required for Xbox LIVE. For Xbox LIVE to work correctly, the following ports must be open: • UDP 88

    • UDP 3074

    • TCP 3074

Note If you are using an Xbox LIVE certified device, these ports do not have to be open."

If you cannot connect with Rogers on Live Chat then call them. I've had good success with their help when I've needed it. They're better versed with the technology end.
