am i responsible for some one elses bill?

This is a utility bill from the electric company. I went to the office and paid my large bill after they shut me off. They took my money and then told me that my wife owed them money and that they would not turn ME back on until the 12year old bill was paid.... we were not even married at that time or nothing.

Can they really do this?

Update:

answer and explain.... leave smart *** answers out of this...be human and not a ***

Update 2:

she is not on my bill.... the ELECTRIC company called my landlord and ran social numbers on my wife and son because they are on my lease

Update 3:

Are you married to her now?? Is the electric bill in her name or yours? IF she is your wife now, and the electric bill is in her (or both your) name, then they can do this, I think. Basically her bad credit is ruining yours, if her name is on the bill now. But if it is just your name on the bill (and NOT hers), then I don't see how they can do this. I don't know, you might just have to pay the bill. Either way, if you married her, it was for better or worse, and it looks like you may have inherited her old bills...(sorry :-( )

Since you are married, each is responsible for the others bills, so, yes, your wife's 12 year old bill will have to be paid before services is restored.

If you're in the UK, the answer is no - but you sound as if you're in the USA.

Can you tell us where you are ? Some utilities in the UK try to use an argument called "beneficial user" which is just wrong.

yes. utlity companies don't and won't play games. the easiest solution is for YOU to get the money from her and PAY THE BILL.
