Why are the Canadian election campaign TV ads so negative this time around?
In past elections, the party leaders were usually focused on telling you what they could do better than the other guy if they were elected. The smear campaigns would come out when the parties got desperate and wanted to paint the other candidate in a negative light. But this election, it seemed to start right from the beginning, with the Conservatives, NDP, and Liberals attacking each other.
I think that this type of campaigning is actually harmful to the group that condones it, and it causes me to lose respect for the party leaders that do it. It is especially shameful of the Conservatives for constantly bashing the Liberals just because they are the next closest in the polls, and I think it may come back to haunt them.
So I ask you, do these types of ads affect your decisions in any way?
Here is one from that I found that gives an example:
Don't get me wrong - it's not like this thing has not gone on in the past. Like Rupert mentioned, the Liberals were doing it last time they were in power too. But it seemed to start immediately this year - right out of the gates. And the last time I recall it really happening bad like this, it was Paul Martin in the last weeks of the campaign when he was getting desperate and knew he was losing.

Reform wants American style politics. They are no different than the Neo-Cons south of the border.
Harper even started his campaign of with his Poopy Puffin ad, and then was surprised that the rest of the country was offended by it.
Oh well.
I almost hope the Neo-Conservatives win this one and we go into a recession even worse than the one Mulroney caused... just because I think it would make people like Harper and Stocky totally unelectable for 60 years.

Yes Bert, but compared to what we are used to from our politicians in the past it is really horrible.

No. They don't.
And you must have forgotten all of the previous elections ads put out by the Liberals. they were total smear, total fear campaigns and they worked too. Made me sick to look at them. Made me sick to see how the liberal supported media smeared the conservatives, the alliance and the reform for decades.
I was sick of seeing Preston Manning torn to shreds by the media and then seeing Luciene Bouchard interviews where the same pack of jackals fawned all over him, acting as if he was the second coming of Christ. Luciene, who should have been charged with treason.
I don't like attack ads, but the media has been so biased for so long. The Liberals have gotten away with horrible attacks on the right wing opposition for years. The Globe and Mail, CBC and even CTV are pro Liberal. I can barely even watch the news when I see how biased it is.
And why not. The CBC and the Liberals all feed out of one trough of the tax payers money.
The ads don't affect my vote. Watching the politicians and their parties in action for years is what causes me to vote the way I do. I don't like political parties who pander to special interest votes to the detriment of the country.
Don't you remember the Liberal's, Harper and his "secret agenda" campaign a few goes back? When all the while the Liberals secret agenda was keeping a lid on the sponsorship scandal. And you know it worked. I have heard people say that they didn't trust Harper, when asked why, they could never explain. So tell a lie often enough and it works. That was smear campaigning.
The conservatives have an uphill battle. Elementary schools even teach to the NDP or Liberal agenda, they smear the conservatives every chance they get. I've seen it and it angers me. School teachers are union, they vote NDP and they make damn sure all the new voters are voting NDP as well.

I am sure that it is because sleazy American politics have spilled over the boarder. As an American I am sorry to hear that.
EDIT: HA HA, Now that I have seen the ad, I have to say that is nothing compared to the garbage that permeates our airwaves. Still, that is too bad for Canada.
EDIT:testpattern, I know, that is why I am really sorry that my country's garbage is the envy of your politicians. That really is not good. I was just humored, not in a malicious way, I promise.
