How much do you tip when going out to eat?
When going out to eat, how much do you tip your server- and why? If your bill was $48-- what would you tip?
Thanks for answering everyone! I'm a server and just wanted to get an idea what people feel is the norm for tipping. I was surprised that people still think a good tip is 10%! hahaha ...or $5 for a nice restaurant and $3 for a cheaper one. WOW! I expect 20%... if you can't afford to tip... STAY HOME!

i tip base on service. horrible service is 15%,ok service 20%, outstanding service 25%.
the reason i give tip even if i had horrible service is because servers make 2.13 an hour. their income is base on their tip. Oh please remember they have to do a tip out ( they have to give part of their tip to the busboys, kitchen chef, and bartenders) which is usually about 5% of the total bill.
Example: $50 dollar tab. tip 20%= $10. tip out 5%= $2.50
so this means that the server makes $8.50. You also have to remember if you charged your credit card the server has to pay a certain percent for the credit card transaction fee. so in actuality they make give or take $8.25, then they have to pay for the tax on the $ 8.50.
Also if you don't tip at all, the server will end up paying out of their own pocket the 5% tip out for serving you.
lol sorry i think i'm getting a little technical....

I leave around 20% for good service. That would be $9.50-$10. If the service was not real good, I would tip less. If the food was slow coming from the kitchen I would still tip the 20%, it is not the servers fault the kitchen is slow. If everything was awful, the server wouldn't return to the table, drinks were not kept filled, etc, I would leave one penny.

I normally tip 20% no matter how bad everything is. I happen to have some family who is a server, bartender, owner, etc. I think it is out of courtesy to tip them well. A lot of time, it is not even the server's fault that you have bad experience with the food or the place. So, be kind! I like to treat people the way I want to be treated but I don't always get the nice treatment. That is another story.

Always 20% unless the server was horrible. Just make sure to leave something in case the kitchen and servers and bus people share tips. Rule of thumb...if you don't have the money to tip, don't go out and eat!

As a general rule of thumb, since tax rates differ from place to place. The easiest way to figure the tip is to take 10% of the total and then add the tax. If you leave at least that amount or more then you usually have tipped enough.

If the service was good rather than just competant and I knew that the waiter / waitress was going to get the whole amount then $5 - $8. If the service was just competant then nothing. If the service was beyond good and really made the night then I might leave $10 or $15.
