Running out of space on Windows partition?

I have a computer that I put together a few years ago. It includes a 60GB hard drive, with Windows XP.

When I installed the hard drive, I thought it would be a good idea to partition it. I made one partition for the OS, another for programs, and a third for file storage.

I'm not even close to filling up the hard drive; there's lots of room left on my program and storage partitions. However, my OS partition is full. I've been getting warning messages that there's less than 200MB left. So far I've been able to delete enough unnecessary stuff to fix the problem, but I don't think I can do that much longer. Meanwhile there's a Windows service pack update waiting that I'm afraid to install.

Do I have any options other than reformatting or replacing the drive?

well there is a program called partition magic, that can help. it can rearrange the partition allocations for you. but it is a bit costly. There are a few other things you can do to help, and to clear up space. I will list them:

first thing i would do is move your swap file or paging file to one of the other virtual disks. you can do that like this. click the start button then right click "my computer and select "properties". then click the advanced tab and then click the "settings" button in the performance area. in the dialog box that pops up the bottom section should be "virtual memory" click the change button here. in this area you can change the paging file from your system disk to a secondard partion. FYI when using 2 hardrives this can boost performance as well.

second i would turn off or change the allocation for the "system restore" feature. you do that like this. right click on "my computer like above, then select the "system restore tab. " from here i think it is pretty clear how to change or turn off this setting, personally i have mine turned off because viruses tend to find a home here and return regularly when turned on.

third clear out your internet temp files, they can actually become a very very large portion of the hardrive in a hurry.

to do this open enternet explorer. then click "tool" at the top and slect "options" from the list. From there under the general tab, there is a delete temp files option. if you have not done this before, do it before bed, it will take a while. also in this same area there is a "settings" button, in here you can allowcate the max space windows will use to save these temp files. i believ the default is like 100 meg. or something.

Forth. you could unistall some windows programs like the calculator or soem standard games ect.. that you do not use, this is done like so.

first click the start button and then control panel, from there choose "add remove programs" Then on the screen that apears click on the left where it says "add remove windows components" from there you can "uncheck" items you do not need.

lastly i would consider a registry fixer or defragramentation software. when adding and deleting software the registry can get pretty messy. this would not save you much space, but could dramatically improove your systems performance if you have done lots of unistalling lately.

Also it was a good call making partitions, i do that as well. because if the operating system crashes then you can re-install windows without effecting your "files" on a different partion...

UPDATE: clan man has a real good point, you could unistall a piece of software and then reinstall onto one of the other partions, this alone could be a huge help. do that with a program like ?MS office, or a newer game and you'll be good to go.

good luck and if you need any additional help, feel free to hit me up in email.

How much space did you allocate for your OS partition? If its less than 10GB I would just reinstall with one partition.

You can try turning off System Restore if you dont use it, this uses as much as 12% of your disk space.

You can check IE if you use it, under settings you can allocate how much disk space it uses for temp files, the default can be as much as 1 Gb. you dont need all that space.

Another option you might try is lowering your Page File, do this only if your computer has enough physical memory.

Remember when installing programs the default location is the OS partition.

So, have you been manually giving another location when installing?

    Good luck

You don't have to reformat or buy a new hard drive. You can use a utility like gparted or norton ghost to change the partition sizes. I just did this with my computer. Gparted is free and does exactly what you're looking for. It's available at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ Best of luck to you!

You don't need to reformat your PC or replace your hard drive...you can just transfer some file from your OS partition to other partition or just add a hard drive...

Use the Disk Management to resize your drive. It shouldn't be a problem with Windows 7. I used the Utility and it worked for me for installing both Linux and Windows 7.
