What medium should I use to connect my water heater?
I need to connect my new water heater to 1/2" copper as well as add a new inline shut-off valve. I have a few options since I have a handful of spare parts and the necessary tools. The major difference is whether I have to do a few solder connections (flexible connections) or a dozen solder connections (straight copper). Is there any advantage or disadvantage to any of the materials?
1. Use 1/2" copper. This requires the use of 4 elbows. Difficulty: advanced. Cost: $10.
2. Use copper flex connections. It seems like there would be a pressure loss with these because of the textured interior. Difficulty: moderate. Cost: approx. $25
3. Use braided nylon flex connections. Possible bacterial concerns(?). Difficulty: moderate. Cost: approx. $25.
4. Use 3/4" pex. I think I'm mostly turned off by the look of this one. Difficulty: moderate. Cost: approx. $25.
Can I get any input from a seasoned expert? It would be much appreciated!
6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoShould I replace stolen copper plumbing with PEX?
Some copper was stolen from the house my family is moving into. The only pipes that were stolen were in the basement, that is, no walls were ripped apart, etc. - only the stuff that was easily accessible. My friend, a casual handyman, has suggested that we replace the missing stuff with PEX pipes instead of copper. I'm leaning towards buying copper and doing it that way. Any advice from the seasoned experts?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoWhat is the cheapest way to sell a couple dozen shares of stock?
My two brothers and I each have 15-ish shares of Disney stock. We're trying to sell them as cheaply as possible. I've heard that we'd first want to get them all into one person's name and go from there. Any ideas from the group??
5 AnswersInvesting1 decade agoWhere can I find a replacement mattress?
I already have a frame, box, mattress, etc. The bed is uncomfortable. Is the mattress the only thing I need to replace? I'd like to get something nice, not just the bare minimum. Where is a good place to get a decent mattress and how much should I expect to spend? (i.e. are the advertisements for $150 pillow-top mattress legitimate?)
2 AnswersDecorating & Remodeling1 decade agoWill I be able to get another grant for college?
I attended a university from 2003-2007. I have a couple loose ends to take care of in order to get my degree. One of them is a two-credit class I have to retake. The tuition is pretty high. This class will cost me at least $2000. Is it possible to apply for a government grant? I'm no longer a dependent and I'm not making very much money at all.
1 AnswerFinancial Aid1 decade agoMovie quote?....everything i was doing seemed pointless, but it led me to you.?
Maybe it was Garden State? or Accepted? It's a guy saying that everything he did in his life up until now seemed pointless, that he didn't know why he was going through the motions, but it wasn't pointless because it let me to [you]. Any ideas?
1 AnswerQuotations1 decade agoShould I pay this out-of-state parking ticket?
I am a PA resident who was on a one-day trip to Columbus, OH. I got a $25 parking ticket at a meter, which had a 10-day pay period. It is now $40 according to their web site. What will happen if I take no action on this ticket? Also, do I have a chance at getting it knocked back down to $25?
7 AnswersLaw Enforcement & Police1 decade agoHow will the 2009 federal withheld change next month?
I see that it is a 6.2% tax credit with a limit of $400/year. I am only making $12 and not even getting 40 hours/week and mine works out to be over $1000/year. Am I doing something wrong? It would seem to me that just about everyone is going to just end up with $400. How is this handled? Will the federal withheld only be reduced until the $400 is used up?
1 AnswerUnited States1 decade agoShould I cash in my savings bonds?
I came across a few savings bonds recently. They're about 6 years old. Is now a good time to cash them in? I know I won't get face value ($700 or so), but I have student loans that I pay 7% on so it's kind of stupid to keep these things if they're not going to earn significant money.
1 AnswerPersonal Finance1 decade agoRouter time always resets to 2002.?
I've been having problems connecting to my wireless network, usually unplugging/replugging the power to the router fixes it. I notice that the time in my router configuration software returns to a date in 2002 everytime the router resets like this. Could this be causing the connection problems and if so how can I fix it?
Router is a D-Link WBR-1310
Firmware is 1.04, harware version A1
3 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoWill using welfare to buy birth control have a negative impact later?
My girlfriend has been prescribed Yasmin birth control. It costs $50/month and planned parenthood doesn't carry it because it costs so much. They told her about another option, in which she gets an Access card and gets discounted birth control at the actual pharmacy. Will using this program ever come back to haunt her?
1 AnswerEconomics1 decade agoHow well-known is the Live/Ebay cashback?
I am planning to sell a laptop on Ebay. Should I list it buy-it-now knowing that someone may be willing to pay a little more knowing they have 25% cash coming back to them? Or is that a somewhat underground program and should I be better off with a traditional auction?

5 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoCan I get a replacement battery for my cell phone?
I bought a Motorola RAZR from walmart about 6 months ago along with extending my contract two more years. My battery is now dying very quickly. I have not gotten the phone wet or use it in any other bizarre way. Am I able to get a new phone or a replacement battery either at walmart or verizon?
For reference, I lose one bar after a few hours of not using the phone. The phone is nearly completely dead after 1.5 days of minimal use (1-2 short calls. 4-5 text messages.)
5 AnswersCell Phones & Plans1 decade agoWhere can I get a durable vinyl sticker?
I have a nokia phone with a recessed logo in the back. I want to put a durable adhesive colorful material over it and use an exacto knife to cut it out. What is a good solid material that will hold up well, while adhering to the device through normal use? I was thinking about going through people that make custom vinyl decals for cars but I couldn't find any real info on it. The logo is about 1.5" wide and 1/4" high.
1 AnswerOther - Visual Arts1 decade agoI feel like I got taxed more than I should have.?
At my new job, I worked 9.57 hours at $7.25/hr. Nothing was taken out for Federal Income Tax, which squared with what paycheckcity.com's calculator figured. My second paycheck, I worked 69.38 hours at $7.50/hr. $38.62 was taken out for Federal Income Tax, while according to paycheckcity, it should only have been $22.09. My state is Pennsylvania. I am 99% certain I put a "1" in the number of exemptions row. Any advice is appreciated!
3 AnswersUnited States1 decade agoMoved a partition with gParted and it crashed.?
I scheduled a few moves/resizes. There were 6 operations total. The last two were growing my data partition from 211 GB to 250 GB. It failed at some point during the process and said something about booting to windows and running chkdsk /f. I didn't make it that far as Windows decided to run it's own checkdisk at boot, where it found hundreds of thousands of errors that it decided to fix on its own, mostly things like orphaned files, corrupted sectors, etc. Some of the files are still intact, such as text files and pictures, but more complex files, such as music and pdf, are clearly very corrupt. What can I do to try to undo the damage? This is several years of work that I could potentially lose.
1 AnswerDesktops1 decade agoI need advice on closing a money market account and an IRA account.?
I don't feel comfortable about the agent/company/terms of 2 accounts I have with First Investors. The sales fee for the IRA account is 10% of every deposit I make, which to me is absurd. If I make that back in interest I'll have a cow. Also, I'm not sure investing is what's right for me. I have student loans and other things that require my money. Can I close the two accounts (money market and IRA) and get my money back without a hassle? Also, most important, is there any way I can get back the $60 in sales fees I've lost so far on the IRA? Thanks to anyone who has any good info.
4 AnswersPersonal Finance1 decade agoI upgraded to a new hard drive. How should I set up my partitions?
I upgraded from a 200gb ATA/133 drive to a 400gb SATA 2.0 drive. I already cloned my OS partition to the new drive. But what is the best way to split things up. I have a Windows XP installation, an Ubuntu installation, a bunch of data and a swap file that has to go somewhere. I'll be keeping both drives. Any help is appreciated.
2 AnswersDesktops1 decade agoCan I get a free estimate on my tires?
I have one flat tire and I'm not sure of how good/bad the other three are. Is it an uncommon request to get some kind of advice/estimate on the tires? I'd like to not replace anything I don't need to and also get everything at once to make use of b3g1 free deals.
