One brigade of the 3rd ID is on standby for NORTHCOM in case the National Guard or FEMA needs assistance in the event of another hurricane or some other natural disaster.

It has nothing to do with the elections.

Since all these people complained that the Federal response to natural disasters was too slow and don't understand the role of the military and local government, the Federal Government was forced to make plans based on the will of the public.

All those people who said, "Why wasn't the Army there," after Katrina.

Not true. In fact, the Army getting involved in "poll watching" during the election of 1876 is what led the Congress to pass the Posse Comitatus Act in 1878 that forbids the use of Federal troops in domestic situations unless a State Governor certifies in writing that the situation is beyond the resources of local authorities and the President honors that request.

In addition, the Hatch Act specifically prohibits military personnel from participating in any partisan political activities at all.
