Follow up on the definition of Cult?

in reference to my earlier question

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AibKf...

it seems that Cult is described in three main ways.

1 A religion

2 A religion that is not my religion

3 a religion that believes in human sacrifice like those crazy people in Indiana Jones and the temple of doom

With these definitions in mind. Should I be concerned if I'm told my religion is a cult, or should I just chalk it up to juvenile name calling?

Update:

that's not a dictionary definition that's a definition arrived at by polling the forum, look at the link.

Update 2:

yeah you people who insist on retelling me the definition, we did that in a previous post, so people who think a cult is not christian or non-trinitarian that falls under

2) any religeon that is not mine.

And those who think a cult is cumpulsory that is covered under

3) weird Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom type religeon

Most or all cults deny the trinity of the Godhead, they have alot of rules

and bondage type requirements, they generally have a prophet or apostles and often make saturday the sabbath, they have made false claims of armageddon or Jesus's return to earth[no one knows the date or time, only God the father] they have additional writtings to the bible or encylicals or books[like the bible is not all sufficient] God has

commanded not to add to his word, you should always check if what you are being taught is lined up with the word of God[the bible] if not, you are in a cult and all you have is religion, the devil is also religious.

It's definition seems to vary depending on who you ask, and it's etymology has both benign and negative origins. But I see it as exclusively a negative term, because if an organization is a positive or a benign one, then it can be called by a variety of other perfectly suitable terms (a church, group, club, commune, etc.) and it wouldn't be needed. My view of a cult is any organization where it's leaders try to regulate every aspect of it's member's personal lives, tries to close them off from the real world and the rest of society, and fosters an unhealthy hostile or defensive "us versus them" attitude in it's members towards any "outsiders". A cult is usually religious in nature, but doesn't necessarily have to be.

The following all include supernatural delusion within the bonding in their contributors: C. The Freemasons D. Christianity E. Alcoholics Anonymous F. The Ku Klux Klan G. Islam I. The People's Temple (Jim Jones) J. Heaven's Gate (Marshall Applewhite) K. Wicca Most right here didn't incorporate Alcoholics Anonymous, however as side of that application one ought to "take delivery of that one is powerless in opposition to the want for alcohol and put up to God for steering"

Since the original church can be described as a cult, which is not a bad thing, any religion can be described as a cult.

cult /kʌlt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kuhlt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

    –noun

    1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.

    2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.

    3. the object of such devotion.

    4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

    5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.

    6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.

    7. the members of such a religion or sect.

    8. any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.

As you can see by these definitions, almost any club, social group, church or other organization can be loosely called a cult.

If you seek a positive angle to all this, remember that "cult" is the root word of "culture" and "cultivate", and that your religion is not the "occult" (which would be kind of like anarchy being the opposite of social order)

That's a good argument for basing your definitions on the dictionary instead of on an anonymous internet forum whose primary demographic is 14-17 year-olds.

A "Cult" is ANY 'religion' that denies The Holy Deity of Jesus Christ, Period!

Depends on your religion, I guess.

If you are free to be here asking that, then it's just juvenile name calling.
