    x + 2y = 1

    6x - y = -20

    It already tells you what you need to do. :)

    First, solve the first equation for x.

    x + 2y = 1

    x + 2y - 2y = 1 - 2y

    x = 1 - 2y

    Substitute x with 1 - 2y in the second equation.

    6x - y = -20

    6(1 - 2y) - y = -20

    6(1) + 6(-2y) - y = -20

    6 - 12y - y = -20

    6 - 12y - y - 6 = -20 - 6

    -13y = -26

    -13y / -13 = -26 / -13

    y = 2

    Plug this solved y value into x = 1 - 2y to solve for x.

    x = 1 - 2y

    x = 1 - 2(2)

    x = 1 - 4

    x = -3

    ANSWER: point (-3, 2)

    Check:

    x + 2y = 1

    -3 + 2(2) = 1?

    -3 + 4 = 1?

    1 = 1?

    True

    6x - y = -20

    6(-3) - (2) = -20?

    -18 - 2 = -20?

    -20 = -20?

    True

    The first one is:

    -3 + 2(2) = 1

    The second one is:

    6(1) - (-14) = -20
