my dog fell off the bed and now cant walk on one of her hind legs.?

my dog is 12 yrs old and fell off the bed and now cant walk on one of her hind legs. is this due to a dislocation or arthritis? she doesnt seem to be in pain but she walks with her leg up in the air and has to hop around. before i go to the vets i just want to know if there going to just xray her or possibly even do an operation?

What does it matter or are you just afraid of spending money? The dog needs some help. It may cut into your Starbucks budget but suck it up and take her to the vet....why are you even asking? If she was walking fine prior to the fall, then the fall must be the reason.

When my dog was 11 she fell down some stairs and had a similar problem with limping. The vet took an x-ray to make sure there wasn't a broken bone and then did a physical exam, flexing her leg and feeling her joints. It turned out that she had bad arthritis in her hip, and the fall aggravated it. I imagine that your vet will do a similar exam for your dog. Because of her age, I'm sure arthritis is a part of the problem if she doesn't have any fractures to her leg. I wouldn't worry about operations for your dog unless they find a severe break or problem. Most likely your dog will be prescribed some anti-inflamitory drugs, sort of like doggy Advil, and will be feeling better soon.

big dog, small dog? How long ago did it happen?

Our chihuahua cross took a bad tumble off our couch and favored one of his legs for a few hours but didn't seem to be in pain. We felt all over his leg and didn't feel anything unusual so, we confined him and watched him closely, he was fine.

If your dog has been like that for more than a day and you haven't seen any change for the better, I would take her to the vet. I would imagine that they will take some x-rays especially given the dog's age to rule out or confirm a fracture. In the meantime, you can give her buffered asprin (you cannot give a dog tylenol, motrin, advil or their generics, only asprin) just in case she is having pain or inflamation in a joint. Make sure you tell the vet you've given her asprin.

Probably will palpate and check range of motion. Depending on what the vet "feels" when he palpates, he will do x-rays. If it were an obvious break or dislocation, you would be able to see it. It might be a less obvious fracture, or just a soft tissue injury. Surgery is not very likely - probably just some anti-inflammatory drugs and possibly a splint if it's broken. Good luck with her!

my dog was 6 months old when he fell off a chair. he was also limping around. when we brought him to the vet, it turned out that he broke it. because he was still young, they put a cast on his leg to put it back to normal position. or something like that! but dont worry, if she doesnt seem to be in pain, it's probably not a broken leg. just twisted maybe? surgery probably wont be involved.

It's probably broken or fractured. I would get her in now. It isn't humane to let her be in pain. If it is broken, she may have nerve damage stopping the pain. The longer she goes without treatment the harder it will be to fix. If the nerves end up permanently damaged, because you don't bring her right away-she may end up with the leg needing to be removed. So I would go now. Because she is old and anesthesia is dangerous.

If she's not walking on the leg, it's probably because it hurts. Take her to the vet. I don't know what they'll do, but she may have broken her leg or injured her hip. She needs to see a vet.

As a pet owner I'm sure you're prepared to pay for whatever the vet needs to do. Good luck!
