What can we expect now that our Marine is in weapons training in NC Camp Lejeune then to 29 Palms, California?

We have been helping out a young man that recently graduated basic training from Parris Island. He came home for 10 days and now is checking in for Weapons training in NC. After that he goes to 29 Palms California. What can we expect in the way of phone calls and when does he get leave? I am just curious, I don't want to bother his recruiter and his family is even more clueless then we are. He seems a little overwhelmed and doesn't seem to understand the process himself. Can anyone give us info?

Update:

edit:You know what caretaker, why not skip the answer and move on. Get a life. I actually told this kid I would try to get some answers for him. His recruiter is with his wife who is getting ready to have a child, so we have tried not to bother him. This is a great kid without a lot of parental support that I am trying to help out.

Wow, some people are just ignorant and mean.

Update 2:

Thanks Not Yet Famous! Your answer was informative.

Update 3:

He was told he will be in California for a year.

Since he already has that much infromation, I am going to assume that he checking into Marine Combat Training, MCT, in NC. He will be there for three weeks and won't have much time to call. It all depends on how the class is run if they will get anytime off. From there he knows that he is going to 29 Palms for MOS school. Life there is different, but depending on his MOS he will be there anywhere from 8 weeks to a year for training. MOS school is different and there he will have free time after classes and weekends off, not to mention long holidays as they come up. As for leave that is hard to say. If he is there for an 8 week course he won't be able to take leave until he gets to his first duty station and that is going to depend on the training schedule and how much leave he has on the books. Same for if he is there for a longer course. A Marine earns 2.5 days of leave each month. The 10 days of boot leave already puts them in the hole. So unless it is an emergency they don't usually authorize leave unless they have it. It takes the first year to climb out of the hole.

The hardest part is over... now he's at Geiger, If he's in infantry then he'll be there for almost 2 months in ITB, if he has a different MOS then he'll be there for 1 month in MCT, don't expect him to call (I called home once the whole time I was there) he'll be very busy. Once he goes to MOS school he'll have the weekends to call as well as the evenings after classes on the week days... MOS school is closer to a regular job, class at 0700 to 1600 with time for lunch... hope this helps
