How can I educate myself about the politics?

There's a lot going on right now in our country and I don't know much about it. I want to know more than what "he said" "she said". My husband removed the TV from our house, so we can spend more time together as a family. So TV is out...any good websites out there?

    That's a good start.

    More to come....

Just know that nearly every mainstream news outlet is corporate owned. For instance, NBC is owned by GE. GE has massive defense contracts with the government. They will be biased in their reporting for they do not want to hurt their owners agenda...and their revenue source.

I wrote a great essay (10 pages) for school pertaining to this issue. Contact me if you'd like to read a copy. It is very informative in regard to the free press that once was.

First of all read your city's paper/website including the free alternative press.

For world news I'd go with Reuters.

Pick a good few independent, alternative sites. I'd recommend Raw Story (left wing), Drudge Report (right wing), Infowars and What Really Happened (independent)

Then above all, pick an Israeli website maybe two because Israel is the US's welfare state and foreign policy is dominated by Israel. I read Haaretz and Jerusalem Post.

You could also check a political forum or social networking site like Digg, Reddit, or Current because those sites act like a filter where you can get a broad source of news all at once.

turn off the talk show host and sit down and read for a little bit, familiarize yourself with our policies and positions since 1970, most haven't changed and the people in control are still the same so you don't miss much in the 35 plus years since, but the same fights that happened then are happening now even though some don't see it....

the public is pissed and reading a little history should help you formulate a better understanding of current politicing.

read--alot--if you listen to npr and rush you get both sides of the shitty coin, if you read, say starting with the constitution and the internal revenue codes and the united states commercial codes, you will have a better understanding of what our framers were facing

Good on you for taking the interest.

If there is any doubt in your mind that mainstream media is a propaganda agent for corporate and government interests, these films should cure you of that doubt.

The alternative is Independent news. That is time consuming because for the most part, it requires reading rather than listening or watching TV and it requires reading from a variety of sources rather than sitting back and let someone else decide the topics for the day. You cannot multi-task when becoming informed with independent media.

    Some of my favs are:

    Natural News

Independent news primary focus on matters concerning health and nutrition. This is the most important site you will ever visit! Health matters ARE political matters because the FDA is no longer acting in the interest of the people. It has been hijacked by big pharma, big chema, big agribusiness and the like.

Natural Solutions Foundation / Health Freedom USA

    http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/index.php?page_id=...

    Information Clearing House

Independent news site focusing largely on foreign policy. They have some journalists on staff, and may of their postings are independent news articles from other independent news media from US and around the world.

    http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/

    Global Research

This global affairs site out of Montreal Canada often posts excellent articles about US and global politics

    http://www.globalresearch.ca/

    Freedom Force International

Network founded by historian and Author (and Federal Reserve critic) Edward Griffin

    http://www.freedom-force.org/freedomcontent.cfm?fu...

Also to form an opinion on a new bill (e.g. bailout bill), go here and read it yourself! Government access to new bills and laws

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110...

Also if you want to know exactly what is happening in the House or the Senate, watch it directly on C-SPAN. There is no more reliable information than hearing it directly from the horse's mouth.

Well done on getting rid of your propaganda box - now for a reality check, in the form of some genuine well-researched and open opinion (not presented by some vacuous Barbie doll):

Try this one first if it's education you're after - this is also a horror story with comic twists by Mike Ruppert, a true hero:

Read EVERYTHING, it's the only way you'll be able to work out the difference between the roses and the official sugar coated horsesh*t.

I'd also listen to MSM and alternative radio, and monitor the web - you can hear lots of news first on the net, often months before it hits MSM and you can contrast the canned and controlled version with the detailed information and work out for yourself the patterns it makes.

Go to the candidate's websites (johnmccain.com and barackobama.com) and do a point by point comparison of the big issues. It isn't terribly fun, but it will help you see the difference between their policies and their plans.

Don't trust ANY site (including this one) to provide you with unbiased news. Listen to a little of everybody (CNN, FOX, NPR, MSNBC etc) for a cross section of reactions and figure that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Good for you for educating yourself and making a decision based on what YOU believe, not what you are told!

I visit lots of different news sites to get different perspectives. It also helps to read the op ed's too. Don't limit yourself to 1 or 2 sources branch out and look at many. You'll be 10 times better informed than the vast majority of people.

I would say that you should take a critical thinking class in order to be able to detect rhetoric in the news media and then go in with an open mind and the ability to discern fact or crap for yourself.
