Can you help me decide on a car please?

I want to buy a new car, and have looked around and want something practical and economical. Do you think that a Kia Rio hatchback is a good choice for a more mature person who must drive elderly parents to the doctors etc. Thanks for any information you can give me.

Update:

Thank you for all your answers so far, we are trying to keep the price down and I am a former Kia owner who loved her car and had to leave it in the states -- Paying cash I may be able to swing a pretty good deal as the Rio here sells for about $14,000 so with the ecnomy being the way it is and new cars not selling well right now, I may be able to swing a really good deal. I definitely do not want another used car no matter what shape it is in. But thanks for the suggestion. PS my in laws are skinny medium height people (about 5'7" or 5" 8")

Update 2:

The Toyotas sell for a great deal more than the Kia.

The Rio is wonderful. Read www.thetruthaboutcars.com and www.edmunds.com and www.epinions.com. One guy was 6' 6 and the Rio fit him perfectly. The Hyundai Accent is the exact same car..

I think the kia is not the best choice. If you want to purchase a practical and economical car I would have to say the Toyota Corolla is a better choice and it is only a few more dollars than the kia.

The corolla will last you much longer than the Kia and as far as efficiency and reliability..... hands down ... this is the choice.

I do not own either cars, but tomorrow while you are on your way to work or running errands count the number of Toyota's still on the road and then do the same for the Kia, and any other car that is in its class and I will bet you that the toyota beats them all combined.

The Corolla makes a hatchback and you will find it to be pretty hot. good luck with your new car

Kia's are better cars since Hyundai took them over a few years ago but I would say if your looking at a sub-compact the Rio's sister car, the Hyundai Accent, would be a better pick reliability wise.

However, since these are older people you may want something bigger. Something like a Corolla which are good cars or a Hyundai Elantra which has the most interior room in it's class; I think would be better for basic transportation. They are safer and more comfortable.

If you are going to be transferring elderly parents a lot, look at something like a 2004 or 2005 Buick LeSabre.

They are very luxurious, reliable and you can fit 2 wheelchairs in the trunk.

You also should be able to find one in good shape with less than 50K miles for under $12K.

The Kia is going to be too small.

i would not go with the kia as nothing about it says mature.

I am amusing that you are talking about the 2008 kia rio which cost about $16,000..

If i were you i would go with a used car may be a little bit older than 08... that way you can get a few luxury details and features for the same price

try something like a VW passat

    http://autos.yahoo.com/used-cars/volkswagen-passat...

    or a Lexus Is300

    http://autos.yahoo.com/used-cars/lexus-is_300-cars...

though these cars might be a bit older and have higher miles they will surly value more than the kia in 5 years they will also make driving a lot more comfortable for you and you family.

not saying that you should get either of the 2 cars that i showed you i was just using them as example

just look a around because sometimes you can get really good deals on yahoo autos, sometimes a new car is not always the smartest way to buy.

The average person who buy a car to be economical and partake in the big savings tend to lose out a lot because they end up paying the same price on the car or spending the same amount on gas they would normally spend on a normal comfortable car.

If you are looking for something practical and economical, I would check out a Toyota Yaris (13700 msrp, 12900 invoice )and the Honda Fit. The Yaris sedan (15350 msrp) gets 33 overall mpg's and the Fit gets 32 overall. The ownership cost (cost after 1st 5 years) of a Yaris is ranked #1 (23,250), the Fit is ranked # 3 (25250), the Rio is ranked 10th (27250). Also check out a Scion XD (msrp of 14600). Just wanted to give you some options. Good luck with your decision!!
