Why do Americans call girls "guys" ? Would they say "Marilyn Monro was a beautiful guy" ?

I recently saw a movie where a mother asks her three daughters "what are you guys doing ?"

"Guys" can be masculine or neuter. Any group of people can be "guys," regardless of gender. "Guy" is masculine, and "gal" is the feminine equivalent.

So, no. We wouldn't say that "Marilyn Monroe was a beautiful guy."

here is how i use it

    group of males: "hey guys"

    group of females; "hey girls"

group of males and females: "hey guys"

if there are girls in the group, i think it is normal to use the word "guys". it become a general term instead of being directed only towards males

"guys" has become a familiar term for most any group when being addressed. However, anyone referring to Marylin as a "guy" will get a backhand from me.

That's just like me saying to my girl friends 'what are you guys doing tomorrow?'

it doesn't mean i'm calling them guys as in they are male.

if i said dudes however, they'd look at me weird.
