For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are SOTTISH children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

    It means stupid.

    "For My people are foolish,

    They know Me not;

    They are stupid children

    And have no understanding

    They are shrewd to do evil,

    But to do good they do not know."

    Jeremiah 4:22 NASB

    Not very flattering, eh?

    This is one good example of why the King James Version Bible is so hard to understand. When it was translated in 1611 the used words that are entirely foreign to us today. A modern language Bible helps us to understand and is easier to read because it uses words that we use everyday. Here is an example. This quote is from the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures at Jeremiah 4:22. "For my people is foolish. Of me they have not taken note. They are unwise sons; and they are not those having understanding. Wise they are for doing bad, but for doing good they actually have no knowledge."

    So in place of "they are sottish children" we have "Of me they have not taken note."

    Hummm - and what is the word in non-english versions?

    Strikes just me as an sample of the politicising of the translation - if not in that translation then one of the previous translation it's based on.

    Scotland - as a legal country - did not exist when the bible was collected. So alternatively I'd have to wonder if the word is an ancient (negative one) that was a deliberately attempt to degrade the Scottish by naming them after it..

    The bible itself give us clear instructions on how to understand it... Isaiah 28:9-10 (KJV) Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: Taking a single line or scripture to establish truth is very risky indeed. A fundamental truth should be supported throughout scripture as a whole.

    Yep, that is correct. I should know, I married one. A redhot, redhaired, scot. Scotland is purely evil. Deep pockets and short arms.
