Non Christian Celtic Funeral Music?
My wife and I were talking about funeral music and I told I don't want anything Christian at my funeral...even pipes playing Amazing Grace. I'm Pagan and also identify strongly with the Celtic peoples of the British Isles, having direct ancestry to them. I'm looking for names of some music that is Pagan or at least Non Christian Celtic that would be appropriate for a funeral, but also reflects my views on death in that a funeral should be a celebration of this life and recognition of a new beginning, not a sombre negative time (other than the physical farewell).

I'd recommend the Highland pipe tune "Flowers of the Forest"; the 17th-century harp tunes "Marbhna na Luimneach (Lament for Limerick)"; "An Géanna Fhíain (The Wild Geese)", and "Carolan's Farewell to Music", this last one by the Irish harper-composer Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738).
None of these are particularly Pagan, but then you won't find much of anything before about 1970 along those lines. But these tunes, more importantly in my opinion, have the advantage of the weight of tradition, as they are commonly played for funerals, and have been for several centuries.
Source(s): I'm a harper of the Irish tradition; I happen to be an Irish-trad Pagan as well, but my suggestions are more from the Irish harp perspective--what I'd choose to play for a funeral, whether the decedent was Pagan or otherwise. - ?Lv 61 decade ago
Deva Premal “The Essence” Yemaya ASsessu, Tumare Darshan, Om Asatoma
Evertar “Enchanted Journey” Departure from the Shire, Silver Fountains Fall, The Gray Havens, Lady of the Golden Wood
Nature’s Harmony “Dreams of Angels” Endless Tomorrows, Floating Eternity, Clouds of Light
Chinmaya Dunster “On Sacred Ground” Purnima Namashkar
Blackmore’s Night “The Shadow of the Moon” Spirit of the Sea, The Clock Ticks On
These aren't necessarily Celtic. You might also want to check out A Bard's Book of Pagan Songs by Hugins or Celtic Woman.

I have a music book entitled English, Welsh, Scottish & Irish Fiddle Tunes. Oak Publications ISBN 0-8256-0165-7
This book gives the history of each music piece and it's score. With a book like this you can at least do some research and then find the piece recorded. By the way I am more than certain that you will recognize many of the pieces.
I hope this helps.

You tube the Chieftains or Derek Bell, Magical Strings, or Visit Sylvia Woods Harp shop online. Not necessarily funeral music but most could be appropriate if you like it. She Beg She More is an excellent piece.

You could try something by Clannad or Enya, look them up on Youtube and see if there's anything that tickles your fancy.
