I have a D-Link N router. However, I can only afford a Wireless G USB adapter.

Yes, your N router is backward compatible with G. Actually, your N router broadcasts on G, the "N" connotes advanced networking capability, like for sharing files wireless between computers which are wirelessly connected to your network. So, you should be fine...

hi I think from the sounds of your configuration, you should be able to use a Wireless USB adapter for the PC that will actually probably connect to the Wireless Router you currently have upstairs. I have a 2800 sq ft house and run it all off one router on the mail floor. Each PC in the network MUST have an adaptor, either an Ethernet connection or wireless (bluetooth is for closer connections than a wireless router on another floor, as a rule) No adapter, no connectivity. Hope that helps :) Lori

As long as they are the same ... drawing a blank on the word I'm looking for but it's the 802.11 or 802.12g or b or both ... total brain fart, sorry.
As long as those are the same for both then you should be able to use them together. Your best bet is to ask at the store if you can return the adapter if they won't work together, usually if it's not a piece of internal hardware or software, they'll let you return it. I've returned routers and adapters before and never had an issue.
Hope this helps.

yes. why wouldn't it? Just don't get the USB adapter that gives you internet everywhere, which would be a monthly subscription
