Cannot connect to internet through router?1?1?1 Help!!!?
Just got cable internet through Charter. The internet works fine if I connect directly from the modem, however, once I try to once a router (I've tired several different models) either wired or wireless the internet connection doesnt work. My computer says its successfully connected, however, the webpages just don't load. Any ideas? My ISP says its a router issue, however, I don't think thats the issue. The modem which I was issued is an Ambit.

Having had charter for some time I can tell you that to get your router to work, you need to CLONE the MAC address of the computer that is working IF you want the router to work!
Here are the correct WAN settings.
DHCP then find the page that lets you enter a specific mac address and use the one that your computer has on it. You can find you current mac address using the ipconfig /all command from a command prompt.
If you tell us what model and make like Linksys WRT54G etc we can tell you what page you can use to change the MAC address.
Sometimes you can get this to work without the clone.
Setup the routers WAN to DHCP for the wide area / internet connection type. Then UNPLUG the modem and router and shut down the computer. Turn power on to the MODEM, wait for it to show a connection. Then POWER on the Router, wait for the lights to settle down (usually 1-2minutes). Then power on the computer. If you connect your done. If not you will need to clone the computers mac address.

Ask Charter which type of connection the router requires (that depends on how they have the modem set up). Then use that type of connection in your router (PPPoE, DHCP, etc.) Look in the router manual for instructions on where to do that.

Every router has a config page, which you access through a browser. Say for instance http://192.168.1.254/ (2wire modem/routers). You have to get into that page and configure it. Maybe you haven't entered a user and password in the router's config page or chosen the right config. Try that.
Figure out what url you have to access on your modem manufacturer's website.

sounds like you haven't configured your router, best bet would be to look in your router manual for detailed instructions on how to do it, or using your modem search for the settings on the net.
