Help on Civilization IV Colonization ?

For a new player it may seem complicated but it becomes easier, trust me. Firstly, the citizens aren't assigned jobs, when you get the list to choose a unit to train in your settlement, a worker will appear at the top, these are what build farms etc. for food collection, but what is important is the placement of your settlement, when you have a settler selected, near-transparent icons (some look like hammers, others like loaves of bread) will appear on each tile, these indicate the fertility of land, the resources available etc. in that area. It is best to place a settlement in the tiles where a blue ring appears on the screen when the settler unit is selected, this indicates the prime location in terms of both resources and defence.

There is a trick to resource collection also, when you train a worker, when assigning it a task, simply click the button that has the arrows coming our from a circle near the end of the action choices, it will appear on the left of the icon with the arrows leading out from the map. This means that the worker will automatically build any necessary improvements to the surrounding area that best assist the settlement. :)
